Pushing For A Rediscovery Of Hempcrete

in #hemp7 years ago

Hemp has thousands of potential uses,..

you can make almost anything from hemp: clothing, shoes, bags, food, rope, paper, soap, shampoo, medicine, and more.

And one area that hemp has a lot of potential is in using it for a variety of building materials. Hemp can be used to make hempcrete and it's a building material that more companies and individuals are now looking to use not just in the US but in other countries as well.

In the US right now, you can already find hempcrete buildings in places like Washington, New York, Kentucky, Idaho, and other areas.

It's been said that hempcrete might play a big role in helping to revolutionize the building industry and for very good reason. The benefits are diverse for opting to use hempcrete to build and they are reasons like sustainability, cost, it's non-toxic, and low energy etc.

What Is Hempcrete?

Hempcrete is a mixutre of hemp + with a lime-based binder + and water. The hemp that gets used is the woody core of the plant that gets chopped up and when it's finished being mixed it ends up looking like gray porridge or a very dark chicken salad (see below).

A number of construction professionals and other hempcrete advocates have been working hard to teach people about using the product and eventually trying to get hempcrete into the mainstream.

This includes an ex-police officer from Australia, Joe D'Alo, who has been credited with leading the charge in his community when it comes to birthing a rediscovery of this material with folks.

After D'Alo left his career with the force he took to pursuing environmentally-friendly construction endeavors and that led him to finding hempcrete. He has already built a hemp home in Australia and is looking to build many more.

There are people already making tiny homes out of hempcrete, others who are making hempcrete dog houses, hempcrete sheds, and more.

It's likely that in the next few years to come that we will see quite the variety of creative uses when it comes to products being made with hempcrete or hemp in general.

The hemp market is one of the most lucrative at the moment and hempcrete just provides one more way that hemp can be used to improve the lives of many.

I’m thinking that I may look int growing hemp. It’s legal in our state now.

Hemp is so versatile!

Nice post again, in my country you say more and more that also houses are build with it.. it's great as isolation and temperature changes... We need to investigate more what we can use better then just creating new stuff. and thx for your support.. If you can find the time and vote for me as witness I would be very very thankful.

I have never heard of it until now , pretty interesting

There are so many uses for hemp that it can disrupt whole industries that now have a quasi-monopoly. The oil industry would lose its power entirely, something that they try to prevent at all cost. This is also why hemp was outlawed in the United States in the first place!

Well stated and love the graphic. Outlawing hemp had nothing to do with people smoking it.

There's loads of these graphs all over the internet :) Just google 'uses for hemp'

Steem on!

When I go to build I want to use hempcrete (probably spelled that wrong)..

Thanks, you relay add a new information.
very nice post

I am working on the pioneering and growth of the use of these materials in the building industry. The future is bright for hemp products and hemp raw materials. So many benefits and applications!

I stayed in a gîte in the Pyrenees recently. It was an old sheep barn converted by the owner. He did it all by himself, by hand. It was really cosy, bare wooden, restored beams. He used hemp and lime for the plaster. It had this really nice texture and it looks really warm and rustic, if walls can look warm! He told us the insulation worked nicely too especially with the wood burner downstairs, the place stayed warm through winter. It had a thatched roof which would have helped.

Nice, wish I could own a little place like that.

Had to edit my comment, autocorrect on my phone made a fool out of me! :P

Super post! Hemp could have a profound effect on the world if only it were more widely known and used.
