SEC S20W6 || White Blood Cells - Module 6

Greetings, everyone; it is a pleasure to join this week's engagement challenge, which was organized by @dexsyluz, who happens to be one of the members of the Teaching teams for season 20. Today I'm participating in the contest titled White Blood Cells - Module 6. A few questions have been given to attempt and I will be doing that straight away.

Define White Blood Cells (2.5 points)

mine.PNG

To begin, another name for white blood cells is leukocytes. It is important to mention this here because I may be interchanging this name as I progress in my explanation and answer of the questions in this contest today.

Leukocytes, commonly known as white blood cells, are produced in the bone marrow,w, and the main aim of these blood cells is to defend the body against any form of sickness, disease, and infection. As you may have remembered, in our previous discussion, we discussed the red blood cells, which carry oxygen and release carbon dioxide, whereas, in the case of the leukocytes, they work directly with the immune system to fight against any foreign invaders, i.e., sickness and others.

Types of White Blood Cells

There are different types of white blood cells and below are the few notable ones that I'm aware of. I will also give a brief explanation for each below. Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Monocytes, Eosinophils and Basophils.

Neutrophils: This type of white blood cells is know for it quick reaction in fighting any form of infection or attack that comes to the body at any point and time.

Lymphocytes: Here, this type of blood cell contains basically T-cells which fight other infected cells and B-cells which produces antibodies or antivirus which help to fight infection.

Monocytes: These cells are responsible for removal of dead cells in the body to give way to the living cells to effectively work in the body of people. The dead cells causes havok so they must be removed and it is the work of thincell to do that.

Eosinophils: Majorly work in the body in case of allergic behaviour and it is also fight parasite within the body system.

Basophils: Just like the Eosinophils it also helps to combat allergic reaction within the body.

Function of white blood cells

As stated earlier, the major importance of the white blood cells is to help fight against foreign invaders in the body. These foreign invaders can be disease, infection, sickness etc. So our immune system becomes very active and alive with the help of these white blood cells in the body as it helps to identify, attack and neutralise every form of attack.

Make a diagram of the white series (2.5 points)

Below let's consider the diagram distribution of the white blood cells according to their percentage in the body system. A brief explanation in word is also give below the diagram.

  • Neutrophils: 55% which is the highest portion of White blood cell in the body mainly for defending infection.
  • Lymphocytes: 30% which is the second highest in the body and it contains T-cells and B-cells, as explained above.
  • Monocytes: 7% this type is used for pathogen digestion.
  • Eosinophils: 5% use mainly to fight parasite in the body and also help allergic people.
  • Basophils: 3% also help in allergic fighting.

Neutrofilia vs Neutropenia (2.5 puntos)

mine.PNG

Neutrophilia and neutropenia are both cases of Neutrophils which is the highest of the white blood cell in the body with about 55% in the body system. So below I will make a comparison between them in the table below.

NeutrophiliaNeutropenia
When the number of Neutrophils in the body is higher than normal. Example if we have more than 7,000 neutrophils per microliter. When the number of Neutrophils in the body is lower than normal. Example if we have less than 1,500 neutrophils per microliter.
Caused by Infections, Cancer, Smoking, Medications etccaused by Bone Marrow Disorders, Nutritional Deficiencies, Viral Infections etc
Conditions such as leukemia can be caused by excess of the NeutrophilsRisk of having infection is also caused by Neutropenia

Explain a case related to the white series (2.5 points)

mine.PNG

To begin with, it is important to mention here that I haven't really have a one on one encounter with anyone who has a case related to white series but I have heard from a friend who is a doctor about a case of it which he came across one of the day's he went to the hospital and that is what I will be discussing today.

He said, he came across a 60 year old man today in the hospital who came because of the many symptoms of illness he has being experiencing. According to him he give himself much rest because he doesn't do too much of work at his age yet he see himself always tired. Also, the patient said he is always attacked by illness often and also his breath sometimes goes off.

With all the symptoms explained, the doctor without diagnosis noticed that the young man may be suffering from anemia and this is because of lack of white blood cell in the body. To effectively check and be sure that his assertion is correct he decided that the man undergoes some series of test which he did.

After all the diagnosis it was discovered that what was suspected from the very begin was very true. Also he noticed that it is due to the white blood cell in the body as well as some dead cells which are not working effectively that gave room for attack of different diseases as there are not strong enough to provide antibodies that will help fight the various disease coming up.

It is important that such illness are diagnosed and identified on time he said and that proper medication will go a long way to boost the immune system and enable it to provide all necessary antibodies to fight diseases.

I want to invite @josepha @suboohi and @kouba01 to also join the contest in this community today.
