Helpful Suggestions from the Community - Community Input Requested for the Welcome Page

in #help8 years ago (edited)

In the Steemit Welcome Page, there is a section of "Helpful Posts from Steemit Users". I would like to add a post that has a collection of helpful suggestions from the community!

Please add your input in the comments below :-)

[Edit] Please try to keep the comments on topic of 'suggestions from the community'. Talking about changes to the platform, the roadmap, etc. are all great conversations to have - but this post (which new users will be reading for advice on getting started with the platform) is not the best place to have those discussions ;)

Note - Everything above this line will be removed after the 24 hour payout window closes. The final post will just have everything below this line. The post tile will also be changed back to just "Helpful Suggestions from the Community".

This post is a collection of helpful suggestions from the community!

Many come to Steemit wanting to earn rewards, but I think that's the wrong approach. Come here to give, not take. Get involved in projects and help out where you can. If you do, you'll find that votes will be flowing in. Many of the people at the top of the trending page probably aren't there because they're the best bloggers; it's likely they're highly involved behind the scenes.

I've been wondering lately, is this page written in any other languages than English? Would it be a lot of work to have links to separate language sections if people contributed the translations?

I believe that there is a larger effort to have the entire website (including the welcome page) support translations. They may request community support for the translations once the framework to support them is in place.

Thanks for letting me know.

of course they come to steemit for rewards. why wouldn't they? thats what steemit is, a site that gives rewards. Anything that has money involved will always be different once a reward is involved. personally i believe most users on steemit are not posting from the heart but from the wallet. they are constantly looking for the next idea that will generate a return.

  • If you're already spending 18-hours in social media everyday, my as well spend it here with a community that cares, while possibly earning $$$ at the same time.

  • It works best if you're contributory - just like in any society / community.

  • No one's telling you what to do. It's up to you to do whatever drives you. What will you contribute regardless of the returns?

First of all thank you for giving us the opportunity to participate.
The welcome page is one of the first impressions a new user gets from steemit, so it's a quite important one.
Growth has been defined as THE no. 1 short term goal according to steemit's roadmap, acquiring and holding new users is and will be key to the platform's success during the next months.
From that perspective the current page is quite 'functional'. If user acquisition was the no. 1 aim, I would try to welcome new people in a different - more emotional - way. Do we have the possibility to link multimedia here? Then I would include the promotion video which was presented in Amsterdam, for instance. The user generated video published by winstonwolfe is also a great piece which shows what a creative and unique community we are.
Before 'instructing' people how to technically use the site and its features, I would rather 'show' them what an outstanding place steemit is, why they are so damn right here, I would make them 'hungry', willing to be part of it... catch them. Please excuse my marketing language ;-))

Last but not least: why not including a short welcome speech done by @dantheman and @ned? A personal 'hello, it's great to have you on board - steemit is the future and you are going to be part of it' is easy to provide and surely would have a great impact...

With regards to the functional advices I have nothing to add.

Again thanks for asking and: happy weekend to all of us! :-)

My advise is to look at Steemit for what it can become, rather than what it is today. Steemit is already a great platform, but it has the potential to become something truly amazing.

Expect to see a lot of growth over the next few years. The dev team is hard at work adding a lot of features/functionality, and the community working to organically grow its membership.

Those of us that are a part of the community today are working to shape the platform into what we dream it can become.

If you can find your own unique way to add value to the platform, and build relationships with the members that are here - you should fit in well and have a great time on Steemit!
