I am quite new to but this is how I understand it

In its most basic form it's a social network. You write posts about stuff that interests you, your thoughts or art or music or whatever takes your fancy. If people read it and like it they can upvote you, which earns you a reward of SBD (Steem backed dollars) and SP (Steem power) SBD is a tradeable token that can be sold on an exchange for fiat currency of other crypto. SP is how much weight your vote has. The more SP you have, the more your vote is worth.

The best way to start is to read other people's posts, comment on the ones you like, adding to the OP as much as possible, and following the Steemies who interest you.

To start with, just use it like any other social network, the most important thing is to build contacts and community.
