Help Koalas

in #help6 years ago

Saving the Koala, or any animal or ecosystem begins with each individual person. Everyone, no matter how small, can do something to help. If each person did even one little thing, like encouraging their family to recycle or to save water or electricity, it would add up to a lot of help for the environment. And saving Koalas begins with simple actions like these. Did you know that there are over 7 BILLION people in the world? Imagine if they each decided to help the environment in even the tiniest way, that would be 7 billion little bits of help for the environment!

PROJECT TIP
Write a letter outlining your concerns about destruction of Koala habitat. Have your classmates sign it and send a copy to a politician and a newspaper.

Every little bit helps all of us on Planet Earth, including Koalas!

Why not take the first step today - here are some ways for everyone to help, no matter where you live:
Learn all about Koalas and their problems. If you do this you will be better equipped to know how to help, and you can teach your friends and family about it, too.
Start a letter writing campaign:
Write a letter to a newspaper with your concerns about Koalas. By doing this you are letting others know that Koalas need help. Then THEY may want to help, too.
Write a letter to a politician to tell them of your concerns about destruction of Koala habitat. Politicians represent the people and have the final say about issues affecting Koalas. Remember, governments, like the rest of us, are learning all the time. They must also be reminded about the Koala’s needs and be persuaded that these needs are important.
Encourage friends & family to recycle and use public transport instead of cars, try not to use chemicals in your house and garden, use less water and take reusable cloth bags when out shopping instead of accepting plastic bags.
Encourage your class to make up a list of recycling ideas for things to do in your homes, classroom and neighbourhood such as saying “No” to plastic bags and starting a tree planting program in your school grounds. Once a week, you could set aside a time where each student tells the class what they did for the environment that week. Collect ideas and post it in your classroom so everyone can be inspired. Encourage other people - because you care, you might inspire others to care, too!

What you can do if you live in a koala area
Plant Koala food trees. Don’t forget out find out which kinds of gum trees are the favourites of Koalas in your area. More information about Koala food trees.
When out driving, ask your parents and friends to be very careful not to hit wildlife crossing roads, especially at night. Remember, Koalas are most active at night.
Keep your dogs your cats inside at night, to protect all wildlife. More information about Koalas and dogs, and about how to keep your cat from harming wildlife.
If you have a swimming pool, place a sturdy rope into the pool attached to a tree or post at the edge, so that if Koalas fall into your pool, they are able to climb out safely.
Support community Koala groups in your area.

It’s a good idea, too, to discuss how you feel about environmental issues with your family and friends. It’s important that you should express how you feel about significant issues like the environment, especially if you are feeling sad about it and a bit overwhelmed. Telling someone how we feel makes us feel better about it and you will be helping others express how they feel, too.
