They are one of the tribes collectively known as the igorots. Ifugaos lives in the province of Ifugao where the famous Banaue Rice Terracesare found. Banaue Rice Terraces is one of the famous tourist spots in the Philippines.
It was believed before the pre-hispanic period, the Ifugaos was displaced because of tribal wars. Until they reach Banaue, a place where they believe the Anitos has sent them to start a new life. Since rice is the staple food old Filipinos and Banaue is a mountainous,steep place, Ifugaos carve the mountains so they can plant rice and other crops.
Ifugaos engineering skills is so advance that the Banaue Rice Terraces is still in good shape despite hundred years of existence. Ifugao rice is one of the special rice crop in the country and according to studies is very low in calories.
Ifugaos of modern age are hired to be road builders and riprap workers since they have a great skill in the said field. Ifugaos are literate people but still their heritage is strongly living.
