Starbucks Corporation is an international coffee chain founded in Washington, United States. It is the largest coffee company in the world, with more than 24,000 locations in 70 countries.1 Starbucks sells processed coffee, hot drinks and other beverages, in addition to snacks and some other products such as cups, thermos and coffee beans. It also offers books, music CDs and movies.

History.
The first place with the name Starbucks was opened in Seattle, Washington in 1971 by three partners: English teacher Jerry Baldwin, history professor Zev Siegel, and writer Gordon Bowker. The three, inspired by the coffee entrepreneur Alfred Peet, opened their first store selling grains and coffee machines, located at 2000 Western Avenue, from 1971 to 1976. During the first year they were exclusive customers of Alfred Peet and then Start acquiring green coffee beans from other suppliers.

The businessman Howard Schultz joined the company in 1982, and after a trip to Milan, he proposed to his partners to expand the sale of coffee beans, with the sale of espresso coffee and others, which was rejected by them for consider that this new activity would distract the original objective of the company, also estimated that coffee was something that should be prepared at home.

The first Starbucks coffee shop located outside the United States opened its doors in Tokyo in 1996. Then it opened another store in the city of Leeds, United Kingdom. In 1998, through the acquisition of the British chain Seattle Coffee Company that owned 60 coffee shops in the United Kingdom, the merger was made, changing the name to Starbucks, the company expanded its activities internationally.

In February 2007, Starbucks already had 7521 stores spread all over the world: 6010 of them in the United States and 1511 in other countries. In addition, the company has 5647 joint ventures and licenses, 3391 of them in the United States and 2256 in other countries. This makes a total as of February 2007 of 13 168 worldwide.
