The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 48, Post #2

in #hebrew6 months ago

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Genesis 48:6-11

We saw Jacob (Israel) speaking and he told Joseph that his two boys are now his. We are hoping he will explain that to us this evening. H3e continues...

Israel repeats that your two children are his and the other sons he has, or will have, will be Joseph's. Then he recounts the story of Joseph's mother's death and where he was when it happened. He buried her in beyt-lechem (Bethlehem).

I feel the heart of a father as the next paragraph hits us. Apparently someone had brought the two kids in and Israel saw them. I can almost hear his voice as he asks him who they were. Israel asks for them to be brought closer and then he continues to speak talking about his old age and his eyes. I can identify with him though I am not over a hundred years old. Israel wants to bless them! That is what we will be getting into in the following weeks.

English

And the children that you fathered after them shall be yours. They shall be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance. As for me, when I came from Paddan, to my sorrow Rachel died in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still some distance[a] to go to Ephrath, and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”

When Israel saw Joseph's sons, he said, “Who are these?” Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” And he said, “Bring them to me, please, that I may bless them.” Now the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. So Joseph brought them near him, and he kissed them and embraced them.
