Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Genesis 47:15-19

We were talking about moving on from the reunion of Joseph and his family, plus all that they would receive as new residents in Mitsraim (Egypt). We are looking at how the famine is proceeding this week.

People were still struggling to make their last food purchase last, but it did not last because the famine was so great. Only Joseph knew how long it would last and that was still just a matter of faith in God. The first seven years of plenty had come true right on time. There are still some years of famine left. He was able to bring his family there due to the famine, but he still had to manage the emergency.

People were still coming to him and buying food. Today's reading tells us that they kept coming and when all their money was gone, they traded their animals to Joseph for food.

The next year, they had nothing left to give to Pharaoh except their land and their very selves. So they agreed that they would trade their land and their bodies as servants in order to survive. Hard times!

Today's reading

English

And when the money was all spent in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, "Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes? For our money is gone." And Joseph answered, "Give your livestock, and I will give you food in exchange for your livestock, if your money is gone." So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for the horses, the flocks, the herds, and the donkeys. He supplied them with food in exchange for all their livestock that year. And when that year was ended, they came to him the following year and said to him, "We will not hide from my lord that our money is all spent. The herds of livestock are my lord's. There is nothing left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our land. Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for food, and we with our land will be servants to Pharaoh. And give us seed that we may live and not die, and that the land may not be desolate."
