The Saving of Souls
Matthew 27:42 (KJV)
He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
Many churches, and those who attend them, have a mistaken understanding of their purpose. We have a mentality that says, “Anything goes, so long as it leads to professions of faith.” The mindset is to get people to believe, whatever the cost. It has led to all sorts of theatrics, wild and worldly practices, music, and music productions, all in the name of getting people to believe.
Notice that the people said they were willing to believe Jesus. They just wanted Him to do one more amazing thing and then they would believe. Jesus could have done exactly what they wanted. But Jesus’ purpose was the saving of souls and not the number of professions. If He had come down from the cross, they would no doubt have been amazed. How could they have denied such a great thing? But then they would have believed to no saving avail. A cross-less Christianity is a useless Christianity.
The work of the believer is preaching to the saving of souls and not merely growth in attenders. A bunch of professing believers who have no salvation is of as little worth than a world filled with lost souls who claim no salvation.
