Have you ever had something super important that you wanted to do but you didn't get around to it? It was something important... In fact it was something so important that you usually set aside time to do it annually.

But here's the thing... life happened and before you knew it it an entire year had slipped by and what you intended to do just didn't happen... It got pushed off to the side like so many other important things.

I think we have all been there right!? It's part of being a finite human being living within an infinite ocean of things we could, should, and want to do.

The thing I'm talking about that I usually do each year is a multi-day fast. Going without food and only drinking water for a couple days. I believe that fasting (even intermittently) is a good way to start the new year. It cues the body to hone in on what's healthy. It sharpens the mind to what's important. It makes keen the spirit to all that I am grateful for.

To add to these benefits it grants extra time (that I would normally be preparing and eating food) to re-focus and do things I have been putting off and procrastinating with. There are also some additional health benefits to the body. It allows my digestive track the rest it needs to cleanse and detoxify. There is even research that indicates that cancer cells are broken down and purged from the system reducing the risk of cancer!

It's also (after the first couple days) a fantastic way to regroup the bodies energy systems and reduce stubborn fat reserves the body has been holding onto. I have also found it to be a pretty sure way to rewind the clock. I feel and look younger after going on a fast. The discipline of doing a fast also brings me extra focus and clarity. Just the thing I need when I'm starting out on a new year!

So! These are all good reasons to fast if you ask me and this is why I make a point of doing at least one every year.

However, despite all of these benefits I managed to miss out because I didn't prioritize last years fast... It's been on my mind every single month but there always seemed to be a reason not to do something hard like this. Well that's NOT going to happen 2 years in a row. No it's not if I can help it!

Previous fasts that I have done lasted anywhere from 4 to 5 days so I have adjusted my schedule over the coming week. I don't usually set a goal for how many days I will fast though... It's something I take a day at a time before deciding to break my fast.

If you would like to follow along with my fast this year I have included a image link (at the bottom of this post) where you can check in on my progress. As long as the timer is ticking it means that I still haven't eaten food yet.

By the way... Any and all words of encouragement that you can leave in the comments section of this post will be appreciated! I always find fasting to be a difficult thing but I'm committed to completing my fast this year!

2020 is the start of a new year and a new decade so let's all do something every day to make our health better this year!

Here's to a healthy fit 2020 everybody!

@wil.metcalfe, In my opinion in this post you've put very important message. Yes, we want to do Infinite thing but it's not possible. In my opinion it's important to develop the habit of writing down our priorities so that if we are not able to complete something, at least we can manage our stuff more better ways. Stay blessed.

Thank you for your comment @chireerocks. I do keep lists but rather than one big one I split them out into 3 categories:

  1. Sand: These are the things that don’t really matter but can be a bit annoying because they fill your day if you let them.
  2. Pebbles: These tasks demand your attention much like if you were to get a pebble in your shoe. It’s probably stuff you should do but if you fill your day with these sorts of things you won’t have time for what’s important.
  3. Boulders: These are the Important things... the stuff that only you can do. The things that you should probably block your time off because they are what move your life forward in positive directions. Chunking time into 3 hour time blocks usually helps although these are the sort of things that might take more than just a couple days of focus!

I’m glad that you got something from this post! I hope you are able to make good things happen this year! Your off on the right foot! 🙂

Oh wow 🙌. I just checked the clock.....1day 18hours so far. Keep going Wil. Fasting is a really great way to repair and renew the body. I love intermittent fasting and I follow the 16/8 version everyday. 16 hours of fasting and 8 hours feeding window where I have two meals a day.
I have been doing it since August 2017 and have been able to maintain a steady weight. That process you talked about where the body cleans and resets itself is called autophagy. The main benefit of an extended fast👏.
Though I have never had an extended fast I heard that the daily fasting is also beneficial and have seen the effects first hand🙌.
Keep going and I am wishing you the very best. Have an awesome Monday and productive week ahead 👍😁

Hi Eric!
Thank you for dropping by with the positive encouragement! I always get a little boost when I see your words in the comment area of my posts! :)

I'm currently at 3 days 11 min without food (only water) and feeling pretty good actually! Yesterday was pretty tough and I was pretty darn hungry so I'm glad to be into day 3 for sure!

I haven't tried the 16/8 fasting method but it does seem that it could be a viable way to fast as it would likely fit easier into real life. I have had to take 7 days off from all of my regular activity to do this fast... It's difficult in that way for sure! I'll have to look a little more into the different intermittent ways to fast.

It's actually something I have been studying more... After all! When your fasting what else are you going to do?! Learn more about fasting and think a lot about food! lol! :D

Autophagy! That's the word I'm learning more about! Pretty interesting stuff! I found a really good Youtube video about fasting by Dr. Eric Berg. If your interested I'll include it here at the bottom of this comment.

Eric! I hope that January is shaping up to be a good start to your New Year! Here's to our continued friendship and your health, wealth, and happiness my friend!
-Wil
