Viremia is a term that describes the presence of viruses in the blood. Viruses are microscopic organisms that survive and multiply within living hosts, such as animals and humans.

Minor cases of viremia can be relatively harmless and resolve on their own. However, if the infection becomes severe or causes infection in vital organs, it can cause organ failure or sepsis, which endangers life, especially in those with compromised immune systems.

Viruses are parasites, which means that they depend on an external host for their survival and reproduction. Some viruses can reach the bloodstream, which causes viremia.

The world of a virus

Viruses are tiny, 45,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair. They come in many shapes and sizes, but all known viruses share the same basic structure. They are made of genetic material, either DNA or RNA, wrapped in a protective protein coating called a capsid.

Many cases of viremia are mild or harmless, but if the infection becomes severe or affects the vital organs, it can cause organ failure or sepsis.

Causes

Most viruses can cause viraemia, but although there are many types of viruses in the world, only some cause diseases in humans.

Some common or well-known causes of viremia include:

-VIH types 1 and 2
-influenza
Viral pneumonia
Viral meningitis
-Virus varicella zoster
-measles, mumps and rubella
-rotavirus
-enterovirus
-herpes
-human papillomavirus (HPV)
-hepatitis B and C
-Virus Zika
-Virus West of the Nile
-adenovirus
-virus flu virus
-Dengue
-yellow fever

  • Japanese encephalitis virus
    -cytomegalovirus
    -bobo
    -Rift Valley fever virus
    -Rage
    -polio

Throughout history, viruses have survived thanks to their incredible adaptability and resistance both inside and outside a host.

Many viruses use bodily fluids to spread between hosts; however, some viruses can live on a dry, non-porous surface, such as a plastic container, for 7 days or more.

Common forms of virus spread include:

-fecal-oral route (accidental ingestion of fecal matter)
-sex contact
-contact with saliva or mucus (from coughing, sneezing or rubbing)

  • mosquito or insect splashes
    -breast-feeding
-congenitally, from mother to fetus during pregnancy or delivery
    -blood transfusion
    -donation of organs
  • through cuts or serious injuries

General exhaustion, headache and fever may be common signs of viremia and viral infection. The symptoms depend on the cause of the infection, but many viral infections cause a similar set of symptoms.

Common signs of viral infection and viremia include:

-fever
-general racking
-muscle, joint, pain and pain
-A headache
-mama or dizziness
-diarrhea, nausea or vomiting
-cold
-nose runny or stuffy
-sore throat
-cough
-no appetite

Treatment

Recommended therapies for viral infections and viraemia can include rest, fluids and plenty of hot soup. For most viral infections, the treatment involves dealing with the symptoms of the infection rather than the virus itself.

Typical therapies for viral infections and viremia include:

-break
-fluids, especially those high electrolytes
-Anti-inflammatory drugs and analgesics
-medicines antiemetics

  • clear liquid foods, like soup stock
    -antihistamines
    -Anti-diarrheal medicines
-creas against itching, such as hydrocortisone creams
    nasal decongestant medications and rinses
  • throat pads or anesthetic sprays
    cough syrups

In severe cases, fluids can be given intravenously in a hospital.
