At the moment this is the dog food I'm currently feeding our dogs. It's supposed to be better than the other foods but after the research I've been doing even this is not enough. It is a great start and if your limited on funds I'd say this is the best food you can buy for your companions.
It's about $55 for a 24-lb bag.. That may sound a little crazy but, it's Holistic dry dog food and is Formulated with 20 Nutrient Rich Superfoods like pumpkin, cranberries, blueberries, carrots, broccoli, almond oil, kelp and lentils. It has Healthy, monounsaturated fats such as olive oil, canola oil, and salmon oil for overall skin and coat health. Plus No corn, wheat or soy which are common allergens for dogs and are the leading ingredients causing the epidemic in diabetes.
Purina has nothing on this food and is probably the most popular dog food at the moment..
It's Pro Plan formula is about $40 for a 24lb bag.
You can go compare the ingredients yourself, I don't want to waste to much time or space on this section, so we'll jump right into the small changes you can make on any budget to help insure your dogs have a healthy long life!
TURMERIC- this is an herb we've been hearing a lot about lately when it comes to our own health, and guess what it's great for our pets too!

and so much more!
It's amazing and an inexpensive way to promote your companions health! You should add it to each meal you give your dogs/cats to insure great health and easy aging. The best way to give this herb to your pets is in a paste made at home.
The Only Dangers of Turmeric for Dogs is if your dog/cat is on a blood thinner, because Tumeric is a natural blood thinner. So If your dog is on medication that thins his/her blood, speak with your Local Vet before you add turmeric to your dog’s diet to be safe.
You can find the recipes online but here is the one I use for me and my dogs -
Ingredients -
1 ½ cups water
½ cup turmeric powder
2 level teaspoons ground black pepper
3 teaspoons coconut oil
Instructions for making Tumeric Paste -
Pour water into a small pan and bring to a boil.
add all your ingredients to the pan together
Stir continuously on a medium-low heat for about 3-4 minutes. If the paste is too thick, add a small splash of water and continue stirring.
Put the paste into a clean mason jars, seal and let cool. It will keep in the fridge for a couple of weeks.
Start your dog with 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon in each meal
Every 5-7 days, increase the dosage a small amount
Once you notice pain relief, increased mobility, or a decrease in tumor size you've found your maintenance dosage!!!
Next we can add Mushrooms to the list of Beneficial Ingredients, here I will discuss 8 different types of mushrooms and the benefactors of them! While beta-glucans have been the most studied component, mushrooms and their mycelium contain other bioactive compounds and proteins such as -
*Alpha-glucans
*Antioxidants
*Enzymes
*Pectins
*Ribonucleases
*Ubiquitin-like proteins
*Peptides
*Lectins
Important Enzymes Produced by Mushrooms Include -
Protease - it helps digest proteins and, through its actions, helps cleanse your pet's blood stream of excess undigested protein
Lipase - helps with digesting fat
Amylase - helps to break down starch into sugar and supplies your pet's body with energy
Cellulase - helps to break down fibers, which in turn promotes good bowel health and regularity
To extend the benefactors of Mushrooms An antioxidant called Ergothioneine, experts now recognize as a "The Master Antioxidant" as it is transported to cells throughout the body to fight damage from oxidative stress and free radicals.
Ergothioneine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is synthesized only by mushrooms and by fungi and mycobacteria in the soil. Plants can absorb ergothioneine through their roots and grazing animals can consume ergothioneine-containing plants.
Your pet's body can't make its own ergothioneine, so cats and dogs depend upon food sources, like plants and meat for it.
Modern farming practices, with their heavy use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and fungicides, have dramatically reduced the healthy fungal communities in our soils! Thus reducing the total amount of ergothioneine in our food supply. If you notice your dog or cat eating grass and strange things around a wood line this is the most probable reason..
Remarkable in so many ways, ergothioneine is a unique antioxidant that can -
Concentrate where there's lots of oxidative stress – especially eye tissue, the liver and kidneys, and red blood cells go straight to the cells' nuclei to help protect the cellular DNA gain access to the mitochondria, the power plants of cells, potentially protecting against free radical damage that can speed up the aging process!!
Here are the Eight Different Kinds of Mushrooms that would be remarkably beneficial to your dogs life and your own!!
Shiitake (Lentinula edodes)
Contains abundant l-ergothioneine and the immune system-supporting polysaccharide lentinan.
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)
Known as a "three treasure" herb, it's thought by the Chinese to harmonize jung (life force), qi (energy), and shen (spirit).
Maitake (Grifola frondosa)
The fruit bodies and mycelia of the Maitake contain high concentrations of immune-supporting beta-glucans.
Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus)
Resembling a cheerleader's pom-pom more than a mushroom, this whitish mushroom improved memory and helped regain a sense of curiosity in a group of study mice. It is unknown whether the benefits in mice apply to cats and dogs.
King Trumpet (Pleurotus eryngii)
A robust culinary mushroom with significant levels of l-ergothioneine, selenium, and beta-glucans. In animal studies, it helped maintain healthy cholesterol levels that were already within the normal range.
Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor)
Known for its rich supply of a particular type of polysaccharide – PSK – that may promote immune, digestive, urinary and respiratory health, and normal cellular growth.
Himematsutake (Agaricus blazei)
Related to the common button mushroom, the Agaricus is noted for its high content of immune-supporting polysaccharides and other important cellular growth-supporting compounds.
Cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris)
Chinese herbalists believe that Cordyceps replenishes Yin and Yang Jing and acts as a restorative tonic for extreme exertion, stress, or from normal aging. Also known for its ability to support energy, performance, circulation, respiratory health, and healthy cholesterol levels already in the normal range.
Other foods you can add to the dog/cat bowl to help insure health are Chia Seeds, Hemp Hearts and Homemade Bone Broth-
*Chia seeds - are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of ALA. Omega-3s are essential for the healthy growth and maintenance of skin and coat in dogs. If your dog has skin problems, adding chia seeds to his diet is one way to help improve his skin condition.
*Hemp Hearts - Dogs are predominantly carnivorous and built to eat meat. That's why hemp oil & hemp protein power products need to be added as a supplement to the diet… not as a replacement.” Most dog foods are like “fast foods” for humans - without all the nutrients and only made to taste good.
*Bone Broth - is super rich in many nutrients, especially amino acids such as arginine, glycine, glutamine and proline. Bone broth also acts as a superior joint supplement, as it contains gelatin (the breakdown of collagen), glucosamine, chondroitin and other nutrients that support good joint health!
