Are Canned Beans or Dry Beans Healthier?

in #health7 years ago

Beans are one of the most nutrient rich, fiber rich, absolute bundles of joy for your body. While they may not be exactly a bundle of joy for those around you (ahem, excuse you) inside they're far better, and good news(!) those bean-farts go away once your gut is used to beans!
I don't care who you are or where you are, you can use some more beans.

types-of-beans.jpg

What type? Whichever you prefer and have access to!
If you can have them all by all means, have them all!

So should you have canned beans or dry beans that you cook yourself?

Personally I prefer to cook my own beans so they can absorb all the seasonings I use, and so they aren't so stinky and soft.
But what does the science say?

What is the cheapest, I want to buy as many beans as I can!

Well first off, if you're going to be eating beans it'll cost about 3x as much to eat them canned, more if you buy organic. So if you're a penny pincher, go for dry, it'll save you a few $$$ a week. Or, y'know, make another post on steemit if you really want those canned beans for some reason~

So how about nutrition?

Well if you're going to be eating canned beans you'll have lots of sodium that you really shouldn't be having, and no salt added varieties cost more generally, so that's something you should consider.
Then do you like the idea of rinsing your beans from a can? If so, dry may be best for you as you lose about 1/4th to 1/3rd of many vitamins if you drain your beans (thoroughly).

But lets be frank here,

Beans are so healthy that as long as you enjoy your beans canned or dry your meal with beans will be healthier than without them. So do what you like better, preferably get no salt added if from a can, and before you bash dry beans for being too hard to cook from dry, try it, it's really not and can produce some delicious beans that'll keep for about a week that simply need to be microwaved (or heated in a pot), hell you can even eat them cold(!), and you're set.

canned is often faster prepared, because its precooked. But i also prefer fresh foods. And love beans too :D

You can already pre-cook beans and throw them in the fridge, they'll stay tasting the same and texture the same for about 4-5days, then they'll stay good for a few more.
It may add an hour or two initial preperation, but it'll taste waaaaay better and probably save you a little with the can...plus it'll be a little healthier!

Arrrgh with the hard-fork it took away my 100% steem power up nooooo I will get steembux :(((

So far I'm lovin HF19 :) as for the beans post, some beans are bad for some people.. those with G6PD defficiency are said to better stay away from fava beans.

Also, i'd like to have a barrel of assorted beans for my food supply.

It seems WAY better, I just didn't see that it reset the rewards, oh well.
I didn't know that about fava beans, I'll look into it~

I have 5 types of beans totaling about 30lbs dry currently and eat about 1200g/dry a week :)

And do you still have friends visiting at your house? Lol

Yeah yeah yeah, after the first few days of beans your gut bacteria gets used to it and breaks down the farty things and things that can cause cramps :)

I didnt know about the cramps. Have you tried sweetened beans? (Not sure how its called but i think it's chinese.)

Are those white lima beans? If so, yes, not my favorite bean, but they're alright. Haven't found a bean I really don't like yet and I've tried all the regular varieties and a few weird ones like cow-beans.

awesome, I love beans. They go great with everything. I usually put them in soup. They make a healthy, energetic, inexpensive meal. The trifecta

Honestly thinking about it, other than on top of raw fruit (lol) I can't think of a single place beans wouldn't be good.
Soup, baked, even on pizza(?), pasta, by their self, with rice/barley/etc...Any ideas?

As a rule of thumb, everything that is dry is healthier than the wet counterpart

Switch dry for less processed and wet for more and I'd agree 100%, which is pretty much what you're saying and I think what you mean.
Less processing means, generally, less garbage~

Exactly. Avoid strong tasting foods because it always means there are a lot of added salt/sugar/fat

not true, drying something reduces nutrient content. eating fresh beans is ideal. canned beans are made from dried beans.

I am not says to dry it, but to avoid putting syrups and sauces on it to enhance flavour. It always makes the dish less healthy
