Great post, though I would add that these days step 4 "Other scientists attempt to replicate the results of the study using identical methodology, and report their findings." is something that is happening less and less often. It's an unfortunte reality that funding is so tight that replicating studies is often seen as a waste of money :(
The world is moving from the rational to the irrational. Good science is no longer valued, and that is leading us all down a very dangerous path. I am amazed at just what nonsense people believe these days, and am not surprised to see that science is suffering for it.
I really can't help but agree. I wish there was an easy fix, but I think people in general just need to start recognizing what science has brought them and valuing the process itself
