Polio Eradication: My Service to Humanity

in #health6 years ago (edited)

Dear esteemed readers, welcome to another interesting spotlight on children.
I'm excited to say that gradually poliomyelitis is been kicked out of Nigeria and Africa at large.
Usually, we have several immunization campaign rounds in a year and we get a lot families not complying with routine immunizations and house to house vaccination for their wards. In this round, we had a wholesome immunization coverage in Borno State, Nigeria. And I'm happy to announce that most parents complied and a good number of them are aware of routine immunization and its usefulness.

Although Nigeria was on the brink of polio eradication few years ago which would have earned her a polio-free nation in 2017 by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) if there are no polio cases for at least 3 years but the last case was reported in 2016 and these cases are children from Borno region and the border of Chad controlled by terrorist group. Insecurities caused by a known Nigerian Islamist terrorist group known as "Boko haram" has been a barrier towards achieving a good coverage of immunized children.
The terrorist group claim that the use of vaccines or vaccination of their children is a plot by the government to reduce their population, this claim led to the much noncompliance to immunization which in turn has interrupted the adequate surveillance of the disease.

The Nigerian government is now addressing the disease outbreak through vaccination campaigns and getting more vaccinators into the hard-to-reach areas in Northern Nigeria.
And now we can be hopeful that in 2019 Nigeria would be free from polio.

What is Polio?

Polio or poliomyelitis is a disease caused by poliovirus which can be transmitted from person-to- person through contacts with feces or droplets from a sneeze or cough from an infected person. Polio presents flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, stomach upset, headache and fatigue. Persons infected with the virus can get paralyzed (Acute Flaccid Paralysis) which can cause death if paralysis affects muscles necessary to help them breathe.
The good news is that polio can be prevented through vaccination.

My fun experience with kids

I had the most exciting moment this period during one of the days I was out, I heard screams, yellings and shoutings from children, they clamoured, "save the children!" I gazed in astonishment. They said, "we want to have a photograph with you." Oops!!! I cringed and said... Alright, fine. Let's have one. Lol....

They didn't stop at the first but followed me around to every post and we had this. Oh well... These kids made my day. I could see the joy and excitement on their faces, not minding whatever situation surrounding them, they're happy. That's why I love kids.. They're really the spice of life.

I can totally relate to the polio challenge in Nigeria. I am a survivor, got medical attention promptly; but have got a mild disability on my right arm.

@starbele, I will be glad to be of help with your project, sometime. Keep it up.

@osita4coin, I'm very much glad that your condition didn't degenerate into a worse case. Thankfully, to your parents or caregiver who gave immediate attention to you. I'm sorry about the effect on your right arm.
Really good to know you are a survivor, also willing to push the "kick of polio" campaign forward.
Thank you so much for stopping here, I'm much grateful.
