Where do 'Alternative Cures' hold their place in this age of Modern Medicine? And could they complement each other?
With advancements now like stem cell technology, 3D prosthesis or even DNA reconstruction through microchip placement on injured parts, there’s certainly more to look forward to in terms of healthcare and recovery. Or is it really so, and are we perhaps moving too fast and not looking at perhaps the fundamental nature of illness and sickness and how we can heal ourselves more inclusively?
Modern medicine surely has taken a far leap. With so much of research being put in and improvements taking place it is no doubt that people are looking forward to living better, healthier and longer lives. From initial detection of ailments, to first response to emergencies, to treatments and consultations, with the use of newer medicines, equipment and medical aids – to even the emergence and popularity of healthcare tourism; it all provides the outlook of professionalism, robustness and is geared towards providing the best a patient could need.
Where in this case do alternative cures or therapies fit in? We know for a certain fact that there are patients who have exhausted all means of finding cures through conventional means, that are left with the only choice of trying out these alternative cures or having to suffer with debilitating illnesses throughout life, or even some that may only have a short time left to live. No doubt that there are also those who by themselves have an inclination to seek for alternative treatments even for the slightest of early developing symptoms.
There’s always the question there of which mode of treatment, whether alternative or conventional, is more effective. As has been put earlier, the infrastructure of modern medicine is well in place, and we can say that it has all the necessary tools and tests to detect symptoms and causes. And also, to administer immediate treatment. Alternative therapies though, go through a longer or deeper route. Experts in both fields - modern and alternative need to be trained well and have experience in what they do to administer the right cures.
Question is, is there a way that both modes of treatment could complement each other and if it’s possible to make use of each one's advantages in bringing about better healing, recovery, and health?
When we talk about alternative cures or therapies, there are some that are already commonly known such as hypnotherapy, chiropractic or also acupuncture. There are these alternative therapies that have grown in prominence and have leading practitioners that are offering them. Alternative therapies do have a science and study behind them yet they also look at the overall aspect, in not just the physical cause of the ailments, but perhaps also the emotional, mental and even spiritual and energetic aspects.
There are other forms of alternative modalities such as naturopathy, ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine, homeopathy, traditional massages and also, what’s slowly gaining popularity; energy healing (example: Reiki, Pranic Healing) and even using the ancient art of yoga and meditation. The whole notion of using these alternative methods is looking at the root causes of ailments and addressing them at a level of bringing about proper healing and enhancing one’s overall well-being. In a way of targeting an onset of symptoms and diseases that have resulted from, perhaps bad habits, stress, living environments or circumstances, or even karmic and spiritual baggage, that have emerged in our life that’s calling for attention. And for it to be resolved towards bringing about a better, more whole and complete self.
Alternative therapies, as they are called, and the variety of them that exist, have an approach of allowing the body’s natural ability to heal. Through their own specific means. Whether nutrition, yoga & exercise, or meditation and energy balancing. These have been practices that have existed for ages that are very much to be re-understood and reintroduced. The way in which modern medicine could be complemented or even combined with these alternative approaches is to very well identify and treat these ailments through the technologies and approaches that are existent as well as allowing a more thorough and structured follow through in tackling the deeper issues that are connected to the disease that has appeared. Which alternative therapies can help.
Many times people fail to realize that what has popped up on the external, is actually a call for looking back inside, in the things that we’re withholding and struggling with that have not been resolved. Yes, things like fractures or tumours or arterial clogging need intervention on the outside, yet there are traumas and pains that need working internally. Not to forget habits & conditioning. Some of which may have gone on in the distant past or even lifetimes. Which can only be known by understand and bringing them to surface, and not letting it aggravate to again recur or appear as another disease.
This is where a holistic approach comes in and often needs effort, reflection and corrective action, sometimes even with the assistance of a counsellor, mentor, healer, guide or therapist. And by that it takes an all rounded approach in dealing with the pre-existing or prevalent issue. There’s no way to guarantee a true, excellent state of health as we know that the body is very much mortal and can always be vulnerable, yet it’s only right to live the best we can live and at same time allow for harmony and well-being within ourselves and for those around us.
No doubt there would always be the question of research, viability, structural and implementation aspects, though that shouldn’t discount the need to truly allow for the best in health and healing and allowing for better lives. There surely will be a time factor involved in bringing about this combined type of healthcare approach, yet it is my hope that it catches on and that it is made workable.

If we actually integrated traditional health methods into new age methods, that would mean basically the death of the mainstream medical complex.
It's all about money. :(
That's not something the rockefellers are willing to let go.
The mainstream medical industry is a large one. And that's a fact. There are things that need first hand medical attention, and we can't avoid that. The key here is to utilize the best of both methodologies - mainstream & alternative. And allow for the patient/individual to know that their own health is in their hands and to lead their lives in a way that brings about proper well-being. And not succumbing to illnesses and seeing that as just the way the body is.
That would be incredible. Big pharma won't allow that but if we keep putting the power in the hands of the people - particularly the consumer... we can definitely make that shift.
Glad you see the light in this. There's too much of an analytical and diagnosis type of approach, along which comes a sort of a fitting prescription/treatment. What you say is true, and the consumer or patient would have to not just look at themselves as being reliant to someone else to maintain their health, rather take charge, exercise, eat nutritious meals, have healthy interactions/environments etc. And there wouldn't even be the need to lament on 'having an apple a day'..
YES!!!
The system has programmed us to put our health care in the hands of "experts" and have been slowly taking the means to heal ourselves away right from under our noses.
The body is not parts and pieces, it is whole.
You nailed it!
WOO!
