What Your Sleeping Position Says About You! 27/11/2024steemCreated with Sketch.

in #health18 hours ago

I was looking for some emails the other day where I had stored some content that I was working on from sometime ago and was finally able to find it. Recently I was reading a post about another Steemit user who discussed some of the problems they have while trying to get quality sleep.

While not diagnosed with anything personally I know that sometimes I have problems that surface, but I wouldn't always say they are severe when compared to the stories I hear from other people.

Regardless this is not a post so much about people and their problems sleeping as while looking at my emails I found a post I was working on related to the topic of sleep. And so I thought not only is it a good place to start but now would be a good time to post it. This is more like a "fun fact study" found by those who have done the research and the odd commonalities these so called scientist have come up with.

I personally wouldn't take these seriously, neither can I say I fully believe it, but apparently your sleeping position can reveal much about you.

They claim the position in which you "rest" while going to sleep could provide information about where you live, your age, your profession and many more things etc.

The study was done on a global scale and asked 15,000 people across a few different countries, each country was about 1000 people and they were asked about their sleeping positions.

It's almost like horoscopes for sleepers haha and so I think the best way to start is by looking at the most common position which is likely not a surprise to many of us which on that will be.

Well maybe, because there is a lot of arguments about whether your a "side sleeper" or a "back sleeper". So breaking it down sleeping on the "left side" was found to be the most popular position overall with 36% of us sleeping on their left side for most nights.

According to the scientists those of us who slept to the left side were found to be more likely university level educated.

So level of education can be measured by your sleeping position.. I kind of saw this one coming I guess.

The scientists found that most of the left sleepers work in marketing, advertising, in the local authority or healthcare.

So if that's the left what about those who sleep to the right?
They say 34% of people sleep on their right-hand side, this makes it the second most popular position, not those "on back" sleepers everybody argues about.

According to the research those who sleep to the right work mostly in transport and manufacturing sectors. Apparently this is the position for mostly people who fall into the 35 to 44 age group.
And so I wonder if that means at different stages in life are we more likely to chance our preferred sleeping position?

As people age their preferred sleeping position may change, children and young adults tend to sleep in multiple positions. And so as adults age they tend to settle into a preferred sleeping position. Lastly those 65+ years may experience changes to their sleeping position due to age related changes.

Strangely it's said this group of sleepers "right siders" is also more likely to be heavier smokers of any other sleep position. This I think could likely chance as with some countries becoming more health conscious and with future plans to ban smoking for health reasons.

Now where there is smoking there is normally coffee, those sleeping to the right are also supposedly the bracket of the most caffeine fans.

Moving on what's the 3rd position most people use to sleep? Nope it's not our "back sleepers" but instead it's those who sleep on their stomach which for many people they think this is a very back idea.
So it can be a little surprising to see it come 3rd but regardless 12% of people sleep on their fronts for most nights.
T
he researchers say those sleeping on their stomach are likely to work in agricultural type jobs or in the fishing industries. Similar to our left sleepers it appears to be the position of those who fall into the 45 to 54 age range.

Those who are sleeping on their stomach is where you will apparently find most of your heavy drinkers, another interesting fact is of the 12% stomach sleepers a staggering 79% of them are women.

The position that lands at number 4 is not exactly a sleep position, this because it's someone who picks various sleep positions during their sleep, which I thought would been higher on the list.

This type of sleeper accounts for one in 10 of the population choosing a variety of different sleeping positions during their rest time.
They are most likely to work in utilities and is again dominated by women at 80% and so just about beating those who stomach sleepers.

Lastly, what position comes in at number 5? Well it's actually finally the "back sleeper", so it's likely that instead of most of us discussing over those who are the side sleepers or back sleepers we should instead be arguing about whether your a left or right side sleeper.
This is because only 8% of people sleep on their backs.
However there is already enough arguing about the left and right side when it comes to politics that we really don't need much more to be arguing over.

So where does the "back sleeper" most commonly work at according to our researchers?
Well they are likely to work in transport and logistics and are said to typically be younger compared to other groups, in their 25 to 34 age range.

So what position do most young people sleep in? Well it seems most young people sleep on their side, with a preference for the fetal position.
I assumed this research was based of mostly children sleeping and not young adults, but I was wrong even young adults mostly like resting in the fetal position.

So back sleepers the fifth most popular position despite evidence to the contrary " but this is likely because of other countries" and their own beliefs. But "back sleepers" have reported the highest percentage of any other group that when it came to waking up they were actually feeling the most refreshed and well rested for the day ahead.

So don't be quick to mock the back sleepers they might be on to something.
