Just a couple of weeks back, E.coli outbreak kills several people in USA. E.coli spread over 32 states in USA. Romaine Lettuce was contaminated with E.coli. Escherichia coli or E.coli is a normal harmless bacteria which has multiple strains. E.coli is the part of normal flora in the digestive tract.

Problem start with the harmful E.coli which a toxin called shiga toxin. Most common form of dangerous strains of E.coli is is E. Coli O157:H7 which produces Shiga toxin. Source1 Source2

Now it is almost safe to eat Romaine Lettuce as shelf life of romaine lettuce is 21 days. Contaminated Romaine Lettuce with E.coli already finished. But before taking follow your states health warning.
