Ways to achieve better work-life balance
It is really hard to accept the fact no profession in today’s time is free of stress or pressure, even though as a social animal, it is our duty to maintain the odds. We work longer hours, don’t get rest even on the weekends, and bring our work home. We keep working even while traveling and the vicious cycle goes on and on. And with advancing technologies like smartphones and cheap Internet services, our workplace is just a click away, always connected either through cell phones or through our laptops. Actually, this is not our fault, we have been made to believe that it is the cost of achievement, but this shouldn’t be the case.
Say goodbye to this habit of checking your phone or messages every now and then, and make sure you take some time out for your near and dear ones.
1. Get enough Rest:
It may sound basic, but many of us don’t maintain a routine where we get enough sleep. Studies show that, when you are restless, you don’t work efficiently and waste your time and energy doing the less important things or doing the same thing repeatedly. This way you are doing harder work and not smarter work.
2. Take advantage of productivity supporters:
Someone who can manage his personal and professional life skillfully is usually the one who manages to get his work done by others. 'Effective promoters' motivate and prepare you to expand your productivity exponentially. The catch is to work efficiently in the right direction in a smart way. This way we can manage to do a lot of work in a very small amount of time. And by being a good motivator, you can always get help in the times you need it.
3. Apply better approaches for doing old things:
You can do old things in a new way, like, you can hold a family gathering and then can go for a walk or organize a cycle ride, swimming or a running contest within the family itself. This way you will also get to spend time with family members, along with doing something that boosts your energy level and rejuvenates you.
4. Reform your schedule:
Rather than watching your tight schedule, and cribbing over it, try and manage the work smartly and more effectively. There has to be a time limit for doing every task that you have assigned in your list for that day, which means, you won’t give unnecessary or extra time for that particular task. When you are done with the assignments, use the extra time for something that interests you.
5. Dodge time and time wasters:
There are a few people and some daily tasks which fall into the category of time killers. They occupy your mind, make you lose your energy and weaken your core interest. The good part is, they are easily recognizable, but the sad part is, it can be a little difficult to keep away from them. For example, sliding down the newsfeed of your Facebook timeline is a time killer. You keep scrolling down in the hopes of finding something interesting. The key point is to keep reminding yourself of your ultimate goal and work according to your priorities.
6. Refrain from the tendency of checking emails and messages too much:
Try not to be a slave to your messages. It seems like it has become our daily ritual to check the messages and emails, just before we go to bed and the first thing after we wake up. So, what happens is we get interested in responding to the emails or unnecessary messages, and this eats up almost an hour of our daily sleep and half an hour in the morning. In turn, we get irritated due to lack of sleep, skip our breakfast in the morning so we don’t end up late and ultimately can’t give our hundred percent to our job or school, etc.
7. Cut out unnecessary gatherings:
It’s a common thinking among people that if you want to be successful or achieve something early in your career, you need to make contacts. For that you need to attend more and more social gatherings, business meetings and all of these, but have you realized that most of these events are pretty useless? It’s the same people, same discussion! Give yourself a break, if you think it will be beneficial attend otherwise you can utilize this time in doing something in your area of interest or by indulging in adventure sports or such. By any chance, if you get to organize a gathering, you can also invite the family members of the employees.
8. Try not to escape the truth:
There are situations where you will have to make tough decisions. Try to be reasonable and decide only after you have analyzed every aspect of the mess that has been created.
9. Get your outlook right:
Just like most of the things, the chances are you will achieve the things you need easily with the correct outlook or perspective. Re-program yourself so that you start thinking of accomplishing a balance in your life. Be grateful for all the things that went well in a day and build up your self-esteem from the things other than your work.
10. Strategies for when the street gets unpleasant:
Our life cannot be a bed of roses always. We all will still have to face the extreme circumstances in our lives, but coming out of them requires having a correct state of mind. Each setback is another chance to get a hold of something. Keep in mind, that it is you who can do something for yourself rather than, someone else stepping into your shoes and helping you out to maintain the pressure at work along with those on personal levels. There are certain stages in life, where people do need counseling, as it becomes hard to manage the work-life balance. Follow the above-mentioned tips and I am sure you will be able to take some time out for yourself any day without feeling any pressure.
