Do you know mosquito can infect you with other diseases other than malaria ?
Many people around the world are ignorant of other diseases that mosquito can infect human beings with. Some of these diseases include:
Zika virus
Scientist say that this virus belong to a virus family called Flaviviridae and the genus Flavivirus and it's mainly transmitted by the aedes mosquitos such as A. aegypti and A. albopictus.
"For most people, it is a very mild infection and isn’t harmful. However, it may be more serious for pregnant women, as there’s evidence that it causes birth defects — particularly, abnormally small heads (microcephaly),” scientists warn.
The likely symptoms include rash, itching all over the body, fever, headache, joint pain (with possible swelling, mainly in the smaller joints of the hands and feet), muscle pain, conjunctivitis (red eyes), lower back pain and pain behind the eyes.
St. Louis encephalitis virus
This disease is transmitted to humans through an infected mosquito and the likely symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and tiredness.
It can result to encephalitis and long-term disability or death in older patients if it is not carefully treated by doctor on time.
West Nile Fever
West nile fever is caused by the west Nile virus and transmitted by infected mosquitoes to humans. Scientist say that 80% of infected people don't present with any symptom.
They warn that "serious problems can include infection of the brain (encephalitis), spinal cord, and tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord (meningitis), which can be fatal.”
Yellow fever
Experts say that the specie of mosquito that cause the fever is called Aedes aegypti.
The different stages of the disease in an infected person include:
Stage 1 (infection): Headache, muscle and joint aches, fever, flushing, loss of appetite, vomiting, and jaundice.
Stage 2 (remission): Fever and other symptoms go away.
Stage 3 (intoxication): Problems with many organs may occur, including the heart, liver, and kidney.
Dengue fever
“Dengue fever is a painful, debilitating mosquito-borne disease caused by any one of four closely-related dengue viruses. These viruses are related to the viruses that cause West Nile infection and yellow fever".
“Dengue fever is transmitted by the bite of an Aedes mosquito infected with a dengue virus.”
"The Aedes mosquito becomes infected when it bites a person who has the dengue virus in his/her blood; and when such an infected mosquito bites an otherwise healthy person, s/he also becomes infected"
Malaria fever
Malaria fever is the most prevalent parasite in Africa and is transmitted by the bites of infected female mosquito like P. falciparum.
“The first symptoms of malaria include fever, headache, chills and vomiting, and they usually appear between 10 and 15 days after the mosquito bite.
“Without prompt treatment, P. falciparum malaria can progress to severe illness and death,” WHO warns.
“Dengue fever is therefore a person-to-person infection,” researchers say.
They're vectors for a whole host of diseases, but we can hardly aim to eradicate them (we probably wouldn't be able to even if we wanted to and then ethical concerns suggest we mustn't go down that route). I went to Mexico last summer so to be on the safe side the balcony door (with a mosquito curtain behind it) was always slid shut. I had two bands on my wrists. They seemed to work for me - I only got bit once. In the past, without the bands, they've used me for target practice.
