Perhaps the term selfitis is still very foreign to the ear, not without cause because this term was recently introduced by a group of scientists from the Trent University of Nottingham, England. Selfitis itself is a mental behavior that encourages one to obsess about making selfi photos. The findings were later published in the International Journal of Mental Health Addiction.

According to the researchers, self-sufferers use selfie photos to increase confidence or mood as well as motivation to compete in the competition of social life. Creating selfish photos tends to make someone addicted especially to those who have suffered from previous mental problems like people who lack confidence.

In the proof, these researchers use data originating from India, the country with the largest number of deaths due to selfie in the world. A total of 200 participants were assessed for their selfie habits then linked to six personality types of the person such as a person trying to attract attention, people who like to remember certain moments and others.

After the data analysis concluded, 34 percent of participants were classified into the group at risk of developing selfitis, 40.5 percent suffering from acute selfitis and 25.5 percent suffering from chronic selfitis. Based on sex, the number of men suffering from selfitis as much as 57.5 percent, while for women as much as 42.5 percent. As for the age group, those aged between 16 to 20 years including the age group who most easily suffer from selfitis. For selfie habits, 9 percent do selfie more than 8 times a day and 25 percent of them divide the three pictures of selfie into social media every day.

Going forward, the researchers plan to conduct similar studies in countries with different geographical factors with India. They hope later, the results of the study can be used to answer the phenomenon of selfie among people around the world.
