Why I Put Flowers In My Smoothie
Smoothies are a quick and easy go-to meal for many. For us, it is an opportunity to pack in the nutrients and to give our digestive track a little break. Some people pack their smoothies with store-bought powders that often have fillers, preservatives, loads of sugar, and have been sitting on a shelf for quite some time. Some people make fresh smoothies using mostly fruits with just a little green. Some make wild smoothies with all sorts of things in them. We are the wild kind. ;)
For todays smoothie, we wanted a citrusy tropical flavor. I harvested some fresh Jamaican Sorrel leaves (DID YOU KNOW! The leaves on the Jamaican Sorrel AKA Roselle AKA Hibiscus sabdariffa plant are edible!? They have a nice citrus/cranberry like flavor and are loaded with vitamins and nutrients), Red Veined Sorrel (has a tangy and bitter note to it and is also high in oxilic acid so use sparingly), Salad Burnett (has a very fresh cucumber flavor), and a whole fresh cucumber.
Next we added a store bought banana, some spirulina, bee pollen, maca powder, and the last of our dried moringa powder from our harvest last year (so grateful they are growing good and strong again this year!).
We added a small piece of fresh ginger, and a big handful of frozen cubed pineapple. Then we added a pinch of our freshly dried coriander seeds. If you have never tasted them plain, just pop one in your mouth and crunch down on them. They have a nice citrusy, almost lime like, flavor. They are so fresh tasting and it was a perfect addition to the citrus flavors we were going for.
Now the fun comes in. We added some of our freshly dried hibiscus flowers, dried bee balm flower petals, dried echinacea flower petals from our apothecary stock. Hibiscus has a nice cranberry citrusy flavor. Bee balm and echinacea add a nice floral yet tart taste and all of the above are major immune boosters.
You could choose to thin this out with almond/cashew/hemp or any nut milk, water, or any liquid really. We just just a little water and ice because the whole cucumber, banana, and frozen pineapple were enough to blend this nicely.
This was sweet enough for us but we also don't tend to make super sweet smoothies. If you feel you need it a little sweeter you could add some honey or stevia. The flavor of this smoothie was a nice tropical citrusy flavor, with a nice mildly floral undertone. It did have a touch of a green flavor but it was hardly noticeable and this smoothie was packed full of powerhouse goodies. All of our herbs are flowers were freshly dried within the last few weeks and were dried at room temp or on the lowest possible setting in a dehydrator to preserve the nutritional content. Talk about super fresh! ;)
I hope this inspires you to make those wild smoothies, mix up those nutrients, and step out of your comfort zone. Add some wild to your day! ;)
Bottoms up! Enjoy! Leave us a comment below with your favorite wild smoothie recipe!

I really need to get more inventive with my smoothies. I'm also always wondering how to use edible flowers in food, so I think this is a good excuse to use them. I've featured this post in the Homesteading - Living Naturally newsletter
