For many years, oral nasal decongestants such as Neozep which is popular in the Philippines carries a warning against use if the patient had high blood pressure, unless directed to do so by a physician. The problem is, a lot of people doesn't know about this. Especially the elders which are candidates for hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases.

Many people tend to use medicines with PHENYLEPHRINE (One of the components found in Neozep and other decongestant) for colds or nasal congestion without seeking an advise from the health care team. Often, they used it as if it was like a candy. Others take 2-3 pills together for a more effective result as they claim but it's a BIG MISTAKE! ❎❎❎ One dose is enough as it is being calculated for your recommended daily allowance.

Now, why is decongestant (Phenylephrine) not for individuals with high blood pressure?

The ability of decongestants to raise blood pressure and decongest the nasal passages flows from their pharmacologic actions as vasoconstrictors. In short, aside from relieving you from congestion you might end up having a high blood pressure attack most especially if you already have one.

So if you suffer from nasal congestion and from hypertension, you should ask the doctor or the pharmacist for an alternative drug that is safe to use. Even if phenylephrine is the only other oral nasal decongestant known to be safe and effective for nonprescription use. Better be safe than never.

Trust me, I'm a Pharmacist ;)
