"These findings demonstrate the potential benefits of potassium supplementation for the prevention of hardening of the arteries," said study author Dr. Paul Sanders of the University of Alabama, Birmingham
The researchers found these conclusions after analyzing mice at risk for heart disease when given a high-fat diet. Rats are given potassium in different levels, from low, normal, to high.
From these experiments, the arteries become hard when given a low-potassium diet. Meanwhile, animals given high potassium have little hardening of the arteries. Aorta, the main artery of the body, mice fed potassium-rich foods are also found to be more flexible.
This is thought to be due to low blood potassium levels that prevent gene expression that maintains arterial flexibility, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation Insight.
"These findings have important potentials as they demonstrate the potential benefits of potassium supplementation for prevention of vascular calcification in atherosclerotic-prone rats and the adverse effects of low potassium intake," said Dr. Sanders.
