Stanford University School of Medicine released a study examining the fluctuation of weight. The study had 23 participants, 13 with insulin resistance and 10 with a normal insulin processing or with insulin sensitivity. Researchers were able to see several changes in their microbiome, cardiovascular system, immune system, and gene expression.

The study was published in Cell Systems, Michael Snyder, PhD said "The goal here was to characterize what happens during weight gain and loss at a level that no one has ever done before," Patient were given a high calorie for 30 days, after that duration each patient gained about six pounds on average.

The slight weight gain caused inflammation markers to go up in both groups. The most crazy result was the change in gene expression associated an increased risk of heart failure. Researchers did mention that each patient's levels bounced back to normal after the excess weight was lost.

This slight weight gain had profound changes to our body as a whole, not just individual parts. This small study is not the “concrete clinical conclusions” but hopefully bring about change and perspective in medicine.

I have found that controlling hormones through diet has a huge impact on over all health including weight gain. Insulin is the fat storing hormone keep that under control and it will be harder to gain excess weight.

I agree, diet is really the best approach to combat weight issues and overall health.

Thanks for the comment.
