Know your food series, Day 2 - Watermelon
Watermelon
Watermelon is one of the fruits most associated with summer, but in addition to the delicious sweet taste that we all know, it also has medicinal properties: decreased blood pressure, treatment of edema and mycosis Skin and more. Watermelon contains a considerable amount of beta-carotene, vitamin B, vitamin C and essential minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iodine and manganese. It contains only 29 calories per 100 grams, which is another good reason to eat watermelon.
- There are many reasons to eat watermelon: watermelon seeds enlarge blood vessels, decrease blood pressure and improve kidney function. For the cleansing of the kidneys, it is recommended to fast and eat a watermelon throughout the day. Cut small pieces of watermelon and eat several pieces every fifteen minutes. Fasting is beneficial for those who suffer from kidney and urinary tract complications and infections. Watermelon is a good diuretic and is therefore good for edema. Watermelon is also beneficial for constipation as it is a mild laxative.

Vitamins
Vitamins play many roles in the body. Their main actions are co-enzymatic function and antioxidant and hormonal actions.
Vitamins are involved in 4 major types of functions:
Coenzyme function: the vitamin binds to the enzyme that catalyses a chemical reaction and acts in conjunction with it. For example, vitamin B2 acts as a coenzyme in energy production by glucose oxidation.
The transfer of protons and electrons in the respiratory chain and the neutralization of free radicals which are toxic to the tissues (antioxidant action).
Stabilization of membranes by inhibition of oxidation phenomena.
- A function of hormonal type by triggering the synthesis of an protein.
Vitamins participate in many cell metabolisms by intervening in chemical reactions either as an active agent, or by allowing the reaction between two agents, or by neutralizing the waste of the reaction.

Benefits
Kidney cleansing:
- fast for a day by eating only watermelon. Watermelon is a natural diuretic while cleansing the body of excess fluid. There are many ways to enjoy the benefits of watermelon as a medicine. Simply cut pieces of watermelon or drink the juice whenever you are hungry.
Kidney infection:
- Do the same. A kidney infection is a type of urinary tract infection that occurs when bacteria enter your kidneys. If you have received medical treatment for it, a healthy diet can help you recover and help protect your body from new infections. Drink plenty of fluids, including fruits and vegetables with a high water content such as watermelon, cucumber and apple.
Kidney stones:
- Make an infusion of watermelon seeds by pouring 50cl of boiling water on a tablespoon of watermelon seeds and wait 10 minutes. Let cool, then filter and drink three glasses a day.
Liver Cleaning:
- Drink three cups of watermelon juice daily. A watermelon cleansing helps the liver to treat ammonia, a protein waste, and converts it into a molecule called urea, a component of urine that is excreted safely from the body.
Colon Cleansing:
- A common problem in people with colon problems is dehydration. Drinking more fluids is the key to having a cleaner colon and better digestion. This lubricates the digested food and provides a good hydration to decompose it. Water, fruit juices, and fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as watermelon, will help.
Constipation:
- Eat a slice of watermelon to help restore the colon and intestines as it is rich in water and fiber. Be careful not to consume too much watermelon otherwise it can cause diarrhea.
Mycosis of the skin:
- rub the watermelon bark on the skin several times a day. Apparently, the bark contains anti-fungal properties.
Acne:
- Do the same. Rub the watermelon bark directly on the buttons and let it act for a few minutes before rinsing. By rubbing watermelon rind on your face you put the nutrients directly on your skin and you clean the areas exposed to bacteria.
Edema:
- Drink 3 cups of watermelon juice as a medicine per day (watermelon juice has diuretic properties).
Hypertension and Arterial Problems:
A small study from the State University of Florida in the American Journal of Hypertension, discovered that the watermelon contains an amino acid called L-Citrulline which helps to improve circulation, relaxes Arteries and lowers systolic blood pressure by nearly nine points.
Gout:
- Watermelon is a particularly alkaline fruit with a high water content, which are important factors for dissolving and eliminating uric acid crystals that cause gout pain.
Diabetes: According to the Livestrong site, if you are diabetic, it is advisable to eat watermelon as part of a healthy diet. Although watermelon contains little carbohydrate and natural sugar per serving, it is also low in calories and loaded with nutrients. Follow the advice of your health care provider.
