What is SMOG?
Smog is a kind of air pollution, originally named for the mixture of smoke and fog in the air.
Classic smog result from large amount of coal burning in an area and is caused by a mixture of smoke and sulfur oxide.
In 1950s a new type of smog, known as photo chemical smog was first described.
Smog is a problem in a number of cities and continues to harm human health. It can inflame breathing passages, decreasing the lungs working capacity and causing shortness of breath, pain when healing deeply, wheezing and coughing.
It can cause eye and nose irritation and it dries out the protective membranes of the nose and throat.
It often stays for an extended period of time over densely populated cities or urban areas.
Now a days smog has enveloped much of Pakistan and neighboring India, causing highway accidents and respiratory problems and forcing many residents to stay home.
The health and environmental experts advised people to don face masks while outdoors to protect themselves against breathing problems and eye, nose and throat problems. Experts further recommended the wearing of sunglasses and the use of eye drops prescribed by an eye-specialist to prevent allergies and all sorts of eye infections.
Experts also suggested an intake of at least six to eight glasses of water everyday.
