37 Ways To Reduce Your Anxiety - #5 Getting Grounded
Getting grounded for me means, using physical activity to get out of my mental zone and emotional zone.
- Mental Zone– logical, analysing and overthinking.
- Emotional Zone– experiencing feelings and emotions.
- Physical Zone – present and grounded in the body.
At times of high stress and anxiety, I would suggest that we are not looking for cigarettes, alcohol or medications. We are looking for a way to feel better. We are looking to deal, or not deal with how we feel. The higher the stress, perhaps the healthier the choices we should make. Which of these activities could you use to 'get grounded?'
- Physical exercise.
- Spending time in nature.
- Walking barefoot on the grass.
- Yoga, tai chi and dancing.
- Eating cooked root vegetables: zucchini, sweet potato, carrots, onion, pumpkin.
- Spending time with a pet and animals.
- Massage/ body treatment.
Spending time every day being grounded in your body, gets you out of your mental and emotional zones. When you are doing something vigorous like exercise, you are not thinking about problems. Your focus is on the present moment. Your mind actually processes your thoughts and emotions, during time spent in grounding activities.
I've created a list of all the things I've done over the last 15 years that have reduced anxiety for myself and for the people I have worked with. I'll share one a day for the next 37 days.
