Masking Market Friday - A Tale of Sewing Masks

in #health5 years ago

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) I hope you will join me as we share different markets across the globe. Different and varied as the countries themselves, I always look forward to seeing what you send me. Come. Sit down. Relax. Enjoy the shortest trip around the world you ever experienced, taking in a market from somewhere different than what you have. And always remember #MarketFriday loves you!

I realize that #MarketFriday is a challenge at this time. Many people are using memories, from days gone by or perhaps markets that they haven't posted. In these trying times, I am happy to see people still partaking in #MarketFriday. Use what photos you have. If you get to go shopping, we would love to see! Don't forget to take photos - whether it be the grocery, art galleries, or even the pharmacy, wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. They are easier to find in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you so much!! ❤

Here in the States, it is recommended that you wear a mask when you are going out in public. At one point, they were deemed not necessary, I believe because of the scarcity of masks for the medical sector. Can you blame them? Step right up, Do it Yourselfers! You have saved the day once again

A few weeks ago, after much searching online, I found that JoAnn Fabric was a great place to get my fabric for making a few masks and in the meantime, help out the local community. Check out the site here: https://www.joann.com/make-to-give-response/ I bought what I needed and picked up a few kits too. Now, I just make my own and donate them. If you want, you can shop online and they have a service to deliver to you curbside. This way, fewer public appearances. And right now, they are even offering deep discounts. Check out the site, it has patterns to make the masks, although, I have an easier one at the bottom of the page! Win-win.

You can order any kind of fabric here. I recommend getting quilting fabric because of the strength it has. It will hold up over time. I use a soft flannel for the middle as it is denser and another matching (or not!) piece in the back. So basically two matching pieces of fabric and I recommend they be different as it is easier to distinguish the front from back when you are sewing. Just my thoughts.

I am fortunate enough to be a quilter, so I have plenty of coordinating fabric to use. I did pick up a couple of special ones that I didn't have. There were a couple of hives and bees I was just needing in my inventory. I just couldn't resist!

I ordered this one and then the next one. They will be here tomorrow and stitched up tomorrow afternoon sometime. I need my hive!

I found a small piece of this wedged in the middle of two other pieces. I think I will use him tonight.

Do you know that the #ColorChallenge was one of the first challenges I tried out? It saved me time and again, not knowing what to post and wanting to keep steemin. I dedicate this picture to #FridayBlue #ColorChallenge by @kalemandra

You know it will be #alwaysaflower for me.

Before you start sewing, wash all of the fabric. I used cotton flannel in the as the middle lining, the filtration is good although not recommended for young kids. It may make it difficult for them to breathe properly.

I made the first sets with elastic around the ears and these will have ties. In actuality, some people find the ties more comfortable, as opposed to the elastic around their ears. Admittedly, it doesn't make a difference to me, either work, but, just know, you have a choice and I will give you both patterns.

20200402_194414.jpg

You need to iron all the fabric before starting. I know that you need three different pieces of fabric cut 6 inches by 9 inches. Then you need two pieces of elastic cut into 7-inch pieces. If you are doing ties. you need four pieces of fabric, one and one half inches wide and 18-20 inches long. That's it!

I use a cutting mat, which makes it easier when you are quilting and cutting many different shapes for the pattern. It makes it a quick and easy process to make dozens of masks in one night. I cut out all the pieces needed and then it will only take me about five minutes to stitch each one up. Thinking about doing it and setting it up takes more time.

Here is a prototype. The real one has three pleats in the front. I was just trying this for size. The pleats make it big enough to fit a man's face as well as a small woman. Unfortunately, I had to go to work so you will have to wait til later for part two. Yes, nobody at my house likes me working nights either, but, that is the way it is for now. Things can only get better, right? Now, don't forget to make your mask! If you can't do it or have trouble with it, let me know. I will either help you or try to send one to you. Here you go! The easiest mask ever!

I want to thank you for visiting #MarketFriday! The support you show the challenge and me, just by showing up means a lot to me. I thank you for that and as always, have a great day!

Wherever you go, whatever you do.

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"

it answered,
"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

Fantastic idea! While the bee prints are the bees knees, my fave always comes down to the Pooh, who after all has a history with the bees!

Hehe! Thanks! I am just finishing up some so I will take a picture when they are done so people can see what they look like.

Who doesn't love Winnie the Pooh???? Thanks for stopping by and saying hello! You sound much better! :)

I am improving day by day, thanks. :)

You are a very wise and kind woman, Denise.
And I've never learned to sew,
and I still don't have a sewing machine, but I try not to go anywhere, we are strict with this, they even fine me.

Only you can take out the trash or walk with your dog within 100 meters, you are not allowed to go anywhere else except for the store once every 4-5 days...

And this is my new post for Friday.

Thank you so much, Svetlana! @singa I need to help our country cover the shortage of masks by at least making some for ancillary workers. While the amount is nothing compared to the need, every little bit helps.

I have a sewing machine and supplies. So, it makes perfect sense to do this. I want to thank you so much for your awesome support every week! It is so much appreciated!

I am about to watch the videos as this is something Lulu and I talked about last night, wishing we had material and of course I guess a sewing machine is essential, as we would then try making some masks, at least for ourselves initially, Maybe after watching this video, I will get motivated to order a sewing machine and some fabric and giving it a go, although my past experience with a sewing matching decades ago was a failure lOl

here is my post for this week

https://steempeak.com/hive-196308/@tattoodjay/market-friday-nautical

The first one is easiest but you will have trouble finding elastic unless you already have some. If you can wait a day or so, I can send you and Lulu a mask. Watch the video anyway and pass it on to the kids, but let me at least do that for you. Especially as you still go out for walks. As a precaution, surgical masks stop larger droplets, splashes, saliva and respiratory secretions from spreading.

In other words, wearing a surgical mask can’t necessarily prevent a given individual from contracting coronavirus, but it could help stop people from spreading it. That is important because people who are infected can spread the virus days before symptoms show up, and some never get symptoms.

So shoot me an answer, as you know I would be happy to do it for you. Unless you want to go through the expense of buying a sewing machine you won''t use.

Thanks for dropping a post and supporting #MarketFriday! You're awesome!

Ye sI understand that about the masks, for the rank and file or average person just heading out shopping the mask is good to reduce the risk of us spreading it to others if we ever get it, but if more do that then the spread can be contained

And yes I and Lulu would;d so appreciate of you could make masks for us when you get the time, not sure how you could find time with how busy you are

I will use my imagination for what fabric I should use for you! :)

Ohh yes feel free to do that, I think you know me well and honestly;y any fabric at all would be great for me and Lulu and we would appreciate it so much :)

You're welcome. It's all work from home if you can. If not, work only if you are essential services but other than supermarkets, food related business still opens but for take out food only and no dining in.

Here too. Banks, pharmacy and medical.Hardware stores too. Lanscape companies are working too.

One thing I find funny is hairdressers supposed to provide essential services and open but only for haircut and today people are crowding there to do all sorts of things including haircut. Then there are people going to manicure places. My wife said her colleague working from home still have to put on fake eye lashes in case of video conference.
