The EASIEST way to think about NUTRITION!!

in #health6 years ago

Firstly I apologise to anyone whom may be offended by my opinion on nutrition and diet... I know some people find the killing of animals for consumption offensive, my intent is not to offend anyone.
Every second month there seems to be a new 'the best way to eat' diet come out.... Paleo diet got a good run there for a while, vegetarian diets have been touted for there positive effects on health throughout the years, and most recently the Ketogenic diet is the new thing to be on.

The way I look at diet and nutrition is very simple.... we are human beings whose genetic requirements for health have not changed in at least the last 500,000 to 1 million years. I myself am quit partial to meat... If I were an early human running around the African plains, I would be hunting down animals and eating them. The large majority of my diet would be meat and fat. Someone who is more partial to fruits and vegies, would spend their time foraging, and their diet would reflective the same.

Why do so many different diets seem to have the same health benefits?
In my opinion, the reason people experience health benefits from diets that seem polar opposites is 3 fold;

1. An absence of wheat and grains

There is no way on earth early humans would have wasted their time, growing wheat, harvesting and processing a crop, to make a loaf of bread. In my opinion, we were never meant to eat wheat and grain... it entered our diet when cities started to be formed and we were looking for easy ways to make the masses feel 'full' cheaply.
Our physiology becomes dysfunctional when a large portion of diet is made up of something our bodies don't really know what to do with.

2. Caloric intake is lowered

A common theme amongst all of these nutrition styles is a lower caloric intake. Human beings were meant to go through feast and famine periods... we weren't meant to process twice our daily requirement of calories, 365 days a year. Our physiology has trouble processing such abundance, and the famine periods have their own benefits especially for detoxification, nervous system function, and immune system regeneration (as much of the research on intermittent fasting is showing).

3. Toxins out

The other common theme is choosing high quality organic products where possible. Our bodies don't know what to do with herbicides and pesticides... and anything that enters our bodies, and it doesn't know what to do with, places a burden on our immune system. The immune system acts on ALL foreign invaders... and it can't be everywhere all at once, so it is reasonable to hypothesise that healing would suffer under such burden.

Supplementation
If someone looked at my diet they would probably call it a Ketogenic diet... high protein, high fat. I still eat fruits and vegies, but they would be in the minority. I do not however believe that taking supplements to get to Ketogenesis (the creation of Ketone bodies) or Ketosis (the process by which the body uses fat rather than sugar as a fuel source) is the way to go. There is too much value in the process as a whole. We are never going to know everything there is to know about the human body... we know so little at this point in time... taking shortcuts is ludicrous in my opinion.
Supplements I do take include an organic colloidal mineral and an organic probiotic... for the same exact reason.. todays farming methods, and the way we build our communities, strips even organic farms of their natural soil content and micro biota. Trace minerals and good bacteria have both also been shown to be important ingredients in human physiology.

Great post and awesome content. I just want to voice my opinion. Not all diets work for everyone, its best to use trial and error. every diet is meant to achieve a different goal, the maintenance of a certain physique is what's very difficult.

Yeah absolutely... if you have a goal other than 'health' specific supplements are going to help. However in my experience, if your diet is focussed on achieving a very specific outcome (ie optimal muscle mass) there will be other facets of health that will suffer as a consequence. Thanks for your comment!
