RE: ADHD and the long road to self-forgiveness

in #health4 years ago

Yes, it definitely helps to know what you are dealing with. People seem to think that labels from diagnoses are bad, but the labels we give to ourselves when we don't know why we are struggling are often worse than having the diagnosis is.

If am still working on the coping, working around and self-forgiveness bit but it has improved since I became that I at least have ADHD. I used to try to improve things using strategies aimed at neurotypical people (not specifically but they weren't aimed at neurodiverse people so being aimed at the majority meant it was more ideal for the average neurotypical person than myself) and it didn't work and I didn't know why. After starting to suspect ADHD (diagnosed now but was in a suspected state for a while), I started to find the other resources and find strategies that are more likely to work for an ADHD brain. My life is far from being fixed now, but being able to work with my brain to some extent still makes the world of difference. I'm glad that you found out about your ADHD.

I see a lot of people mention their sub-type. I was never given a subtype though. If I had to guess I'd say combined but the hyperactivity is mostly evident in terms of the shit-tonne that I think and how much I can talk if I'm comfortable enough to talk, but idk, no subtype was ever outright told to me. In my case, we are possibly looking at co-morbid Autism too which complicates things too.

I saw your previous post on upgrades vs to-dos and was happy to see another voice about ADHD on here, since ADHD and similar issues aren't very well covered on here, at least not by people who actually have the disorder / disability / form of neurodiversity. Your strategy was interesting. I can see how that could work. I actually meant to upvote that post of yours, but instead I followed you and forgot to upvote it until I saw it again.... when it was already outside of the 7 days... My bad...

Knowing about how your brain works certainly can help and I'm happy for you that you found that out. It sucks being in the dark.
