Gold Toll Milling Addresses Health & Environmental Issues of Mercury Pollution from Artisanal and small-scale gold mining
More than one year after its historical entry into force the Minamata Convention on Mercury, hosted by UN Environment meet to address mercury as global emissions rise by 20% ended its second Conference of the Parties (COP2) in Geneva, Switzerland Nov. 23rd.
Minamata disease(Japanese) is a neurological syndrome caused by severe mercury poisoning 1st discovered in Minamata city in 1965 from the release of methylmercury in the industrial wastewater from the Chisso Corporation's chemical factory, which continued from 1932 to 1968
Signs and symptoms include ataxia, numbness in the hands and feet, general muscle weakness, loss of peripheral vision, and damage to hearing and speech. In extreme cases, insanity, paralysis, coma, and death follow within weeks of the onset of symptoms.
A congenital form of the disease can also affect fetuses in the womb
"Artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is the world's largest anthropogenic source of mercury emission".
Gold miners are highly exposed to metallic mercury and suffer occupational mercury intoxication. The global disease burden as a result of this exposure is largely unknown

"The health effects on the miners are dire, with inhaled mercury leading to neurological damage and other health issues. The communities near these mines are also affected due to mercury contamination of water and soil and subsequent accumulation in food staples, such as fish—a major source of dietary protein in many ASGM regions".
ASGM is the primary source of gold production in Ecuador accounting for 85 per cent of total national production. Ecuador ranks fourth in Latin America in both estimated gold production and total number or artisanal and small-scale gold miners.
"Environmental impact of ASGM in Southern Ecuador is causing considerable environmental impacts, the most important of which are related to the discharge of metals, metalloids and cyanide into adjacent rivers".
"Studies have shown that ASGM operations annual gold production can be as high as 200 tonnes (6.4 Million oz) processing with mercury (Hg) and/or cyanide emitting an estimated 1,000 tonnes of mercury annually with gold workers being exposed to intoxicatingly high levels of mercury with 85% of them suffered neurological symptoms such as tremors, and 44%–56% of them experienced restricted fields of vision, slow reflexes, sensory disturbances, unbalanced rigidity, and ataxia".
"The risks to children are also substantial, with mercury emissions from ASGM resulting in both physical and mental disabilities and compromised development Chronic exposure to mercury is known to lead to neurological disorders that include blurred vision, tremors, malaise, memory loss, and intellectual impairment"
"The majority of mercury emitted by gold smelters being deposited within 1 km of the emission source contaminating the urban areas with a mix of lead, mercury, manganese, and various cyanides eventually flushed into the river system poisoning the water and killing all aquatic life in the area"
