Someone asked me

Hello Mrs.Maria!

It's been 4 days I have heartburn and pain in the upper abdomen every time I eat, it's also very nauseous and almost vomited. I have consumed syrup syrup medicine with Dimethylpolisioksan (DPMS) content, Aluminum Hydroxide (AI (OH) 3), Magnesium Hydroxide (Mg (OH) 2) but the symptoms of hearburn and abdominal pain are also not relieved. How do you handle it, Mrs? because this is very annoying if any of me after eating anything must feel. Thank you Mrs.Maria.

Answer from me

Heartburn or gastric acid disease or commonly called GERD in medicine is a condition in which stomach acid rises to the esophagus and causes irritation of the esophagus. The cause of this condition is because the muscle that is at the border of the esophagus - the stomach does not function properly so that stomach acid can rise to the esophagus. Some factors that increase the risk of gastric acid disease are:

  • Obesity

  • Long stomach emptying can result from fatty foods, foods that are not chewed properly, and foods that are difficult to digest the stomach.

  • Eat foods that increase stomach acid, such as coffee, tea, alcohol, spicy foods, etc.

  • Cigarettes

  • Pregnancy

  • Diabetes

  • Abnormal stomach location (hiatal hernia)

  • Medications that cause an increase in stomach acid such as aspirin and drugs that cause muscle relaxation such as hypertension medications.

Gastric acid that rises up to the esophagus will irritate the esophagus and provide symptoms such as chest heat, nausea, chest pain, neck congestion, coughing, heartburn, etc. Handling can be done in various stages starting from lifestyle modification then using drugs to surgery. Some things you can do for your own handling are:

  • Lose weight if it's excess

  • Eat smaller portions but often

  • Chewing enough food before swallowing, 32x is recommended

  • Avoid lying immediately after eating

  • Avoid coffee, alcohol, spicy foods, and fatty foods

  • Avoid cigarettes

  • Avoid stress because it can also trigger excessive production of stomach acid

  • Avoid using clothes that are too tight, especially those that compress the stomach area

If the condition persists or worsens, we advise you to consult a doctor directly. The doctor will do a question and answer and several checks that are considered necessary to find out the cause of your condition / complaint. After knowing the cause the doctor will provide appropriate treatment.
