THE HEALING PRISM
For many years, before I began to study Traditional Chinese Medicine, I was totally entranced by the I Ching.
It is a binary system which underpins the entire language & numerical system of ancient China.
From it & certain mentors like Confucius I learned to analyse myself & find balance in my mental health.
Right now I am sensing & reading about some pretty desperate people who are doing their best to hold their positivity together & yet they are admitting failure.
All I can do is offer my own formula for self discovery & resilience.
I sincerely hope it helps someone.

I want you to think of a prism of colours like this:
As you know the Chinese always work from the bottom to the top in their writing so we order the colours similarly & match them to a characteristic, an internal organ & an emotion.
RED
Primitive instincts, kidney, fear.
In Chinese medicine the kidney is the most crucial organ. It produces "vital essence" which is known to us westerners as spinal fluid & also bathes the brain. It is the seat of our most primitive self, the sex drive, the basic but unconscious instincts to digest, breathe, grow hair, nails, to sweat, to hear & our speedy reactions in a fight or flight situation.
Fear is the emotion which damages the kidney & if generations of people live in fear it can become genetically transmitted to our children. Fear causes the kidneys to contract & almost clench to the point where its production of "vital essence" is inhibited. This shortens life & can make us extremely ill.
It is, therefore essential to nourish the kidneys with ginger in the winter months & red berry juices during the summer to keep them warm.
Make a conscious effort to feel fear without reacting to it! Feel the fear & do it anyway.
Not an easy task - but essential.
ORANGE
Survival instincts, liver, anger
The liver cleans the blood & feeds essence to the eyes. It is where our survival instincts manifest themselves. Survival is a serious & exhausting business for any organism. These are the drivers of our instincts to feed, clothe & protect ourselves. This character is damaged by anger.
So the key to maintaining a healthy liver is not to permit ourselves to become too angry or to poison it with anything that would artificially fire it up, like alcohol or some food additives & drugs.
YELLOW
Personal endeavour, skills, gut, courage.
Our gut is a complex organ which is the first brain. If it is not functioning well we lose interest in creativity, learning, become indolent, unable to see the point in caring about much even to the point of cowardice. Hence the term "yellow belly".
The Chinese consider the gall bladder to be a source of courage when it is well cared for. So attention to our food & drink is very important for our mental wellbeing. Avoiding unnatural chemicals is essential, eating raw food whenever possible & in season.
GREEN
Unconditional love, heart, joy.
Our hearts really do leap for joy, don't they? Yet too much excitement can over stress the heart. We can't have too much of a good thing, it would be life-threatening!
When joy goes out of our lives we say "my heart is not in it" & "I am heartbroken". These are powerful moments which can overwhelm us easily. Love can be tempered with the discipline of applying it unconditionally & universally, not forgetting to include all of nature & most importantly, ourselves in the mix.
Not loving yourself is capable of making you very sick.
BLUE
Authority, brain, control
The seat of our self esteem, confidence, & our deductive abilities, or the lack of them. It is the deposit of our experiences to date & each brain is special & unique. It is so fragile that it has to be encased in bone & we barely understand the magic of it.
It is a continuous maelstrom of electricity which does not cope well with interference from unnatural frequencies.
When it is unbalanced there is chaos, irritability & intolerance, authoritarian manners & arrogance.
When it is settled in a natural environment there is peace, tranquility & tolerance of others.
PURPLE
Wisdom, eternal soul/spirit, connectivity
Keeping a healthy soul requires us to be receptive, capable of change.
Nothing in this universe is still, everything changes & it is wise to nourish the soul with deep contemplation & regular meditation, focusing ahead but not dismissing the learning of the past.
Now that you have this knowledge you can use it to balance yourself, recognise which aspects of yourself you neglect & which aspects dominate your personality.
You can resolve to focus attention on any one of your 6 to boost its energy by placing an object of the corresponding colour near you or even wearing that colour.
You can heal yourself of anything.
All it takes is believing you can.
At present, many of us are unhappy because the world is full of fear & much of it is transmitted to us via electronic media.
Would the fear exist if we switched off the medium through which it flowed?
Living in fear is far more damaging to our health than any pathogen.
So let's start at the bottom of the beautiful prisms we are, shall we?
We must strengthen our vital essence rather than allowing it to be depleted.
Think red.
