Consensus mechanism.
Determine the level of security to advance to the next block. The protocol that drives Bitcoin is the labor test consensus (PoW) which consists of a competition between miners to find the solution to a cryptographic puzzle.
Another type of consensus protocol is the PBFT (Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance) in which a node is chosen as the leader, while the rest of the nodes are validators.
Harmony consensus validators are chosen based on the participation test.
Sharding
Harmony has created a fragmentation scheme through which computational responsibilities are divided into smaller fragments which perform their tasks individually, thus making it easier to process.
Harmony Fragment
Harmony has created its own fragmentation scheme, secure and linear scaling.
Harmony has a beacon chain and fragment chain.
The beacon chain is an identity record that comes from a random generator. The beacon chain helps strengthen the security and consistency of the states of the fragment chains.
Fragments store separate blockchain states and process transactions. Each fragment chain contains its own statement, and all tokens are distributed among all fragments.
Random Fragmentation
This process consists of agreeing a random number to determine the fragmentation responsibilities of each node. Harmony focuses on calculating, sharing, testing and securing information related to the randomness of the numbers generated for node assignments.
The random number must comply with the following:
- No one should be able to predict it.
- Its validity must be verifiable.
- The generation algorithm must scale to a large number of participants.
The process of consensus and fragmentation in Harmony is directed by epochs, each epoch is a predetermined period of time. A random number is generated at the beginning of each era, and the fragmentation structure will be determined based on that randomness.
Harmony focuses on combating corruption in this environment, through the adoption of the reclosing mechanism, based on the cuckoo rule. After the end of an era, the validators who withdrew their participation will be evicted from the network, while those who keep their bets stay. The new validators who bet during this time, may obtain new voting shares.
Harmony emphasizes improving network utilization, as well as improving real-world networking scenarios.

After the successful commitment of a block will reward all the validators who signed the blockCuttings of stakes:
If it is found that the validators sign a dishonest block, a certain amount of wagered tokens will be trimmed. This punishment will be carried out to achieve greater security in the network. The validator who managed to verify the bad behavior of another validator will be rewarded.
