7 Days in Gwaii Haanas Park - August 2014
It is a beautiful morning to begin steaming from Queen Charlotte on route to Gwaii Haanas. The "Atlas" is a beautiful vessel that was converted from a fishing troller to a pleasure craft specifically made for this purpose. It begins by loading the gear into the boat with guests unknown to me. There are 2 couples from Toronto, Ont and I singular, and of course the captain and chef!
Looking at the day, and what a day to be out on the water, gorgeous. It could not get any better! I prayed for good weather, and positive energies for one month, and the Universe has provided. The image is in Queen Charlotte, Bearskin Bay.
Once underway, we steam past the famous Haida Heritage Centre at Ḵay Llnagaay. My dad's totem pole is on the far right, at the shed, carved for Skidegate Village. Each of the poles represent a village in Gwaii Haanas, now I will see the villages for the first time. I spent a lifetime dreaming of going to see the ancestors home.
We need to find anchor for the night, and pull some crab traps in hopes of eating a freshly caught meal. Life is grand. Sadly, no crabs... :-( But the trip is just beginning.
I am feeling so much happiness to be on this trip of a lifetime. It is so beautiful, it takes the breath away just looking at the nature around. I could be content to travel here in Haida Gwaii, every year.
The travellers from Toronto turned out to be a very close connection, we bonded immediately. If you are going to be in a boat for 7 days, you want to get along with everyone. The captain is amazing, I feel secure on the water, and the food is delicious!
More to come...
