Gunung Padang, the Oldest Megalithic Site in the World Found in Indonesia
Indonesia should be proud because Indonesia has a megalithic site. The site is Gunung Padang. Of the various studies this site is predicted to be one of the oldest sites in the world. This 10,000-year-old site is called the site of Göbekli Tepe in Turkey.
The site of Gunung Padang is estimated to be built in 8000 BC. His age is even older than various heritage sites of the past, such as the Pyramids in Egypt which were built around 2500 BC, the remains of the old city of Mahenjo Daro and Harrapa in India which are 3,000 years old, and Mesopotamian cultures that were in the same era.
Danny Hilman Natawijaya, researcher at LIPI's Geotechnology Research Center, summarized by CNNIndonesia.com, said, "This is important for Indonesia's history. Because it was called our civilization in history in 600 BC in Kutai. Previously there was no major civilization, it was wrong."
Indeed, if noted as written in history books, it was never discussed about the civilization of Indonesia's past in the megalithic era. There was a little reviewed at that time and it was said that in the past ten thousand years it was still in the time of farming and not yet having a high civilization.
Danny calls the Gunung Padang megalithic site not built in just one era. However, the structure is estimated to have been built continuously in three periods from 8,000 BC to 1,000 BC. The oldest layer of 10,000 years old is buried underground. While the youngest layer is 3,000 years old.
In addition, Denny said that strangely the structure of the temple was deliberately disguised.
"(Like) deliberately piled up with land and set up simple megaliths on it. It is still a mystery, why is it made like that. The tendency is to be disguised so that people will not be looted," said the Chair of the Gunung Padang Research Coordinator.
