RE: Gridcoin poll for removing project SAT/MindModeling/CSG
I dont know what you have against SAT. They clearly stated on the website:
Work generetor was temporarily stopped. We are going to move the project to a new sever approximately in November, so we need all tasks to be processed.
It is still early November. They did not state that the server has moved. So of course no WUs atm.
In the mean time, whoever crunched SAT over a month ago are still being rewarded their full magnitude.
We should work towards a grey-list/jail system for temporarily-inactive projects, but in the mean time removing the projects from the whitelist is the appropriate action we should take.
Yes. So you should have put up a vote a month ago. But not now when its shortly before they send WUs again, probably before the vote is done and the change made.
They stopped generate new wu at date 16 September and around 1 October the last reward of credits was made. In October the website went down and was back around 1-2 weeks or so and servers are up and running but not generate new wu.
The website have only this info from 16 sept:
"Work generetor was temporarily stopped. We are going to move the project to a new sever approximately in November, so we need all tasks to be processed."
No info if it´s done if it already running and no date to start. As it´s been 2 when vote ends they would also be de-listed for no avg rac in NN. And as you say we could prevent this and stop reward long time ago, but we did not. That is why we need a grey list. This my message to the users that we can´t suspend reward project as it is . To inform users take action until the day we solved it we could vote these project out. If project gets online and fully working with no complication i would change my vote. What users think it´s up to them.
We could handle this better and we could help as a community to inform them to these things but none of them have been done.
I have flagged that Atlas@Home and vLHC would also move soon and they have started to prepare this but we don´t know when they stop generate wu.
I dont think the CERN will take long to move those.
CERN is merging like 3 projects into the one, that's substantial change & will require all their projects removed and replaced with the one when the time comes.
They will do this in small steps and they might do it less time. A short break it would be and as they use VM and proxy this could be more setup and problems then other project would have. As last 2 weeks both of these got firmware issue to a router and made the task fail. So anything can happens but we can only act afterwards if the damage would be to big.
It's not my responsibility to continuously monitor projects to detect when they're idle. We don't know that these projects will have work units available before the end of this vote, if work units do become available then they can be voted back in.
No one is currently affected because no one should be earning any GRC for these inactive projects at the moment.
If anything, being temporarily removed from the whitelist should draw each project's attention to the impact that Gridcoin has on their available volunteer compute resources.
Erkan and I are currently working on an app to check server status/work units in progress for each BOINC site with a !check <.projectname.> command in the #gridcoin IRC. Should help for easier grey-listing.
cm shouldn't be on the hook for putting it up for a vote just because the vote was late. Now we can all take equal responsibility. :D
This is similar to an idea I had about making something lik that visible on gridcoinstats. Nice work peppernrino.
nice work, Erkan*.
