BOINC project PrimeGrid is looking for a new home and sponsors

in #gridcoin7 years ago

The BOINC project PrimeGrid, which is also whitelisted as research project for Gridcoin, needs help:

  • "If anyone has connections with a corporation, university, cloud  provider, or rich uncle that might want to sponsor a crowd-sourced mathematical research site, we'd appreciate any help and advice you can  provide."
  • "We are looking for a new home.  Don't worry;  this isn't the end of  PrimeGrid.  This is not the first time we've had to move.  It probably  won't be the last.  But we need a new digital abode in which to take up  residence."

Further info here.

PrimeGrid is a distributed computing project for searching for prime numbers of world-record size, it started in 2005.

Server colocation for 2017, 2018, 2019, they require: 7000€

Gridcoin donations are welcomed:

I have already sent my income worth of about a week crunching for PRIMEGRID. I suggest we rock their house with Gridcoin – donations!

thx for informing us

also, nice marketing for Gridcoin to be listed next to BTC and ETH ;-)

Gridcoin users donated so far >6k GRC

Here's an idea - what if we sponsor it (The Gridcoin Foundation)? Let's say for a year. It's probably not a large sum and would boost our standing within the BOINC community considerably. Not to mention that we would get our logo on the Primegrid's frontpage (they have already removed Rackspace).

I am reaching out now to see if the hosting I have available will fit their needs.

I am willing to host for free, and we can continue down the path of seeing if we can get approval for the foundation to sponsor the hosting at a discounted price. All I need to know really is how much of my resources they would need and I'll price it out as low as possible. If we can't get approval for reimbursement, I'll cover them for free.

I must say I like the idea. I'm afraid the issue is how can the gridcoin community come to a consensus to do it? By voting? Who will take the lead in discussing what they need and what we could do?

Maybe they need crowfunding and we could redirect the 30k there instead of burn it? Redirecting stolen goods to a good cause, quite Robin Hood like.

Excellent idea

If they setup a GRC address and tell us how much is needed, they may even get a lot of donations

Primegrid is already accepting donations in GRC and their admin (Rytis Slatkevičius) is a long-time Gridcoin supporter. It's a less known fact, because they actually didn't need much donations so far, since Rackspace was covering them 100%.

Iam in ! Iam definitely for going that way if the foundation does not want to or can not I think we also could do this on our own depends on what sum are we talking here. But iam absolutely willing to donate

Thats an awfully uncear request. What do they need? Money, physical place...??? How much?

Their hardware requirements are, as mentioned there:

  • "We need about 30 GB of RAM on the DB/web server, with about 300 GB of SSD RAID 1 disk and a 1+ GB network connection. We also need a second server with 8-16 GB of ram and about 100 GB of SSD RAID 1."

I am thinking that something like this (link below) might be a bit much for their needs? What if the Gridcoin foundation bought this and funded a colocation for it? This would provide enough computational resources for their project and many other BOINC projects in need of a temporary/permanent home. While it is not in use as described above, it would be able to provide computational resources towards currently whitelisted projects. This could cover some of the cost of the colocation and initial investment. It is also congruent with Gridcoin's mission critical objective, vision, and values.
