Should we really follow our dreams?
From young age we are taught to follow our dreams. In many aspects of life this principal stands true, in relationships for example we tend to follow our instinct whether it is right or wrong.
But does the same principal apply as far as employment?
I find it hard to give an straight answer to that question.
Many will argue that following your dream will eventually pay of and you will achieve greatness . Of course this is only true if only the "dream" has a value to someone or the society.
Also having "a dream" as your job, is something necessary to continue doing it and not getting bored or frustrated of it. You will also be willing to put the hours needed to accomplish any goals you might have.
Recently someone told me that following your dream and perusing a career out of it is wrong and Utopian, like a fairy tale where everything works out in the end, "and happily ever after..." He followed by saying "you should always go after opportunity". I realized he had made a good point.
Many people may dream of something impossible or something that can not achieve because they do not have the needed skills to accomplish it. An example is all the talent shows on TV, so many people take a chance on their dream and so many fail. Another example is people get through universities that give them a diploma in order to peruse their dreams, but then they can't find a job.
I realized that following our dreams may make us lose on many opportunities. Of course there is no correct answer to the question "what should i follow, my dream or opportunity?", there is no right or wrong. Usually the answer is in the middle.
After some thinking i boiled it down to we should work towards our dreams in life but not miss on opportunities that might arise on the journey. We should work towards our dream but not let our dream become our life.
These were my thoughts and i felt like expressing them.
Cheers!
