The richest poor man. The Angel of Mercy. Khadam-e-Azam. These are some of the titles given to the one of the greatest human beings of the world, Abdul Sattar Edhi. From a very young age, in the Banvata Gujrat, Edhi’s mother taught him to put others first. Edhi used to get 2 paisa from his mother and he used to give one paisa to the needy. After migrating to Pakistan in 1947, his journey of humanitarian work started. In 1957, after an Asian flu epidemic breakthrough, he brought a place to officially start his work. Edhi sahab formed the ‘Edhi Foundation’ which had orphanages, maternity homes, shelters for abandoned women and children, rehabilitation centers for drug addicts and mentally ill, clinics for the handicapped, blood banks and an ambulance service. The ambulance service is WORLD’S BIGGEST ambulance service up to today. Moreover, he has rescued over 20,000 abandoned infants, rehabilitated over 50,000 orphans and has trained over 40,000 nurses. The sheltered kids used to call him “NANA”. Despite saying no to any kind of fame or awards, he received 25 awards in his lifetime. He led the simplest life possible along with his wife. He made no discrimination while helping any person. He once said after many years later many people complained and questioned, ‘Why must you pick up Christians and Hindus in your ambulance?’ And he said, ‘Because the ambulance is more Muslim than you’. He passed away on 8 July 2016 due to kidney failure after having placed on a ventilator. The Edhi foundation is still running life before, let everyone contribute to it a little bit in any possible way.
