This animated gif was made with Data Gif Maker by Google News Lab. With this online tool you can create comparison gifs in seconds.

Here is an online version of the example above.

Make Your Own Comparison

Follow this short tutorial and you'll be able to make your nifty animation.

  1. First enter left and right term and define their colours.
  2. Then enter data series for both terms.
  3. Enter description of values.
  4. Choose whether the values are percentages or they should be added.
  5. Press Launch Comparisons button

For my example I entered percentages as they were three times during the poll dubbed Battle of Digital Currencies:

You can see the results online or download them as an animated gif in high or low resolution.

The file with a high resolution gif of this comparison takes 3.4 MB of your disk.

Now Is Your Turn

Make some splendid gifs :)

Is This Tool Useful?

I don't know. It is a display of what can be done fairly quickly. With some added cosmetics like logos, multiple series, titles, legends, whatnot, ... it can become a presentation in itself.

Final Question

Do Google engineers really have too much spare time? Or is it one of their tasks at work to goof around?

Sort:

Awesome stuff! I'm going to try...

:) Do it and posts it here :)

Ok well, nice but i'm struggling to find a user case where such a gif would be relevant... Maybe elections rounds?

:) It's your choice and imagination. Make up some numbers. It doesn't have to be useful ... :)

The gifs looks good, but the wriggling deceives an battle which does not exists in that kind.

I agree. Looks like the devs are calculating some values between data points to make it more animated :)

Hah pretty neat.........

Neat it is. Useful ... ? I don't know :)

I wonder if it has a proper API besides the forms you can fill in, if I could feed it with live data it would be more useful.

A very valid question. Thinking as a programer :)

I would guess that API is certainly there. Where it has public calls is another question. It might have.

You can create your gifs on the fly straight by composing the url. As you can create QR codes for example:

wget -O251.png "http://chart.googleapis.com/chart?cht=qr&chs=200x200&chl=251&chld=L|0"

This is very useful tool, thanks for sharing!

You are welcome.

Have a great day :)
