The Winter Line - George Everest Point

in #goldenhourphotography7 years ago (edited)

I took this picture at a little spot called George Everest Point in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand in north India. When George Everest retired, this is where he came and built a simple house made of stone, far away from any people. You have to walk 1-2 KM straight uphill after you get to the last point where cars can reach which means that back in the day, ol' George probably really never wanted company.
The views from this spot are unparalleled and in the winter there is a phenomenon called the Winter Line. (we are told) This happens in only two places on the planet... namely in this part of the Himalayas in North India and in a certain section of the Alps. (I'd love to hear from any people that have seen this in that part of the world).

The Winter Line phenomenon, to cut a long story short, is where during both sunrise and sunset golden hours, you can actually see both night and day simultaneously on the horizon. So below the sun, the first dark shade is actually the slow disappearance of night which is still visible thanks to some complicated physics of light refraction and reflection and interaction with the moisture in the air (someone who knows how to explain it... love to hear from you)
