Ross Castle

untitled-12-72-Edit.jpgBuilt in the 15th century by the O'Donoghue clan, it was later taken over by the Brownes, who went on to become the Earls of Kenmare. It was one of the last strongholds to capitulate to the British Cromwellian armies. How? Well, there was a prophecy that the castle would not be taken unless "strange ships" were to sail on Lough Leane. Maybe the British forces knew of this because they built warships in Kinsale, sailed them to the mouth of the river Laune, and oxen dragged them up the river and into Lough Leane, on whose banks the fortification resides. It must have been some sight to see warships in this relatively small lake. The castle, which had been besieged by 4,000 foot soldiers and 200 horse until the artillery on the ships arrived, soon surrendered.

Taken just after the sun set behind the mountains, as I wanted to get a nice warm glow from the floodlights on the castle.

Gorgeous... I have seen it during the day with busloads of people walking around it which made the castle not that impressive. This is just something else :) Now I need to go back!

Thanks, @r00sj3 ! Glad my photo inspires you to revisit my country. I hope it inspires more to come here!

I do hope so too! Everyone should get to know Ireland a little... and then I don't mean "Dublin". I was planning on going back anyway, still need to cruise the Shannon ;)

Awesome picture! :)

Thanks, Gabriela!

Warm glow acheived! Thank you so much for sharing the background story too. Looks like a peaceful place even though it has had a less than peaceful past.

Congrats on your @photocontests win...you deserve it!

Thanks, Samantha! Not that peaceful depending, depending on the time of day. This is a very popular touris spot, in the very popular tourist town of Killarney. Such a beautiful place but super busy in the summer.

It is my intention to get to Ireland this summer with my son. A cousin of mine has done all of the genealogical research and knows all of the places connected to my family. It will be so interesting to see where I come from.

Great to hear! I hope you have a wonderful time. Try to get to the west coast for a few days and check out The Wild Atlantic Way. The vast majority of my landscapes are taken all along our spectacular western coast. You'll find lots of rural communities mixed with great food produce and the BEST traditional music that Ireland has to offer.

Thank you so much for the travel tips...I will take all I can get! I am certain it's going to be a meaningful trip.

I am following you and looking forward to seeing more.
