Controversy
The nominations attracted criticism for the lack of women chosen: no women were nominated for Best Director or Best Screenplay, despite what was perceived as award-worthy work by Céline Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire), Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), and Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood). However, there was one notable success for women in film: Hildur Guðnadóttir became the first solo female composer and only the second overall to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.
The Alliance of Women Film Journalists (AWFJ) nominated the HFPA for the AWFJ Hall of Shame Award for "excluding women nominees in major Golden Globe categories."
The ceremony garnered both praise and criticism for the opening monologue by Gervais, which many perceived to not be politically correct. Gervais mentioned many controversial topics, including Jeffrey Epstein, The College Admissions Scandal, Leonardo DiCaprio's taste in women and also compared working for Disney or Apple to going to work for ISIS.
