Almagro: the crisis in Venezuela has proportions never before seen in America

The OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, said on Friday that the humanitarian crisis that Venezuela is going through is unprecedented in the history of the Americas, and he urged all countries to help the more than 1 million Venezuelans who until 2017 they had left the country, according to the International Organization for Migration, which sees the number doubling this year of the presidential elections of May 20. "This is already a humanitarian crisis of proportions never seen before in the Americas, it is a moral obligation of all others to help the Venezuelan brothers in this regard. We know that migrating is not an easy process, that's why we support UNHCR's efforts to promote protection and assistance to Venezuelan refugees, "he said in a message posted on his Twitter account Friday.

Almagro said that from the OAS are working on several initiatives and a plan for the resettlement of refugees in cities in the interior of Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru.

"We are also developing a guide for those who migrate by bus to the south and preparing a study on how support initiatives from different countries can be complemented. Know that you are not alone, "he said.

Almagro has been closely following the case of Venezuela and at the last meeting of the Lima Group that took place in Peru, he demanded more pressure for the government of President Nicolás Maduro.
