The Largest Legal Case In The History Of Bitcoin

The largest lawsuit in bitcoin history ended this week, when an Egyptian court ruled that the bitcoin founder should be extradited to the United States to face charges related to operating an unregistered money-transfer business.

The case against Ross Ulbricht, 31, convicted in February 2015, has been going on for more than three years and has many twists and turns. It all started with New York prosecutors accusing Ulbricht of being the Dread Pirate Roberts, a moniker for his activity that was later used by others running similar services.

In 2013, Ulbricht launched what he called Silk Road, an online marketplace where users could buy drugs and other illegal goods using bitcoin as a payment method. He was arrested in October 2013 and placed in solitary confinement after paying a $200,000 bond.

In February 2015, he was found guilty of seven counts, including drug trafficking through the website, money laundering, and conspiracy to hack into computers used by other illegal merchants on Silk Road. In court filings last year, prosecutors said they had identified more than one million transactions made through Silk Road during its two-year life.
