Linus Torvalds, the inventor of Linux, may be the most influential computer scientist of our generation. Linux is the Internet's operating system and is the reason the Internet runs so efficiently. Linus created Linux in 1991, as a graduate school project when he was a student at the University of Helsinki, Finland. Today, he still tightly controls the Linux kernel. It's still his baby and is deeply committed to its continued success and enhancement.

I can't think of any graduate school project that has had the same impact on the world has Linux has. Since Linux has basically been his life work, it's natural that Linus would want to be absolutely sure that his code base is absolutely secure and maintainable. Linus has strong ideas about source code maintainability and distributed version control. He wrote Git because he was dissatisfied with every other source code management system and, being Linus, he decided to take two weeks to write a better one from scratch. He succeeded magnificently.
