My opinion on the new ads on Steemit

in #getyerlearnon5 years ago

I see an awful lot of complaining about the addition of the ads in the feed for the default Steemit pages and to be honest I was a bit surprised when I saw them as well but I'm here to say that I think people should maybe just chill out a bit.

I am not going to get into the specifics as to why the ads appeared all of a sudden, but I would imagine, that this "feature" much like almost all changes that are made to almost anything, are because revenue generation is necessary in really any business that exists in the world.

To be honest, I don't really find them all that annoying because they are easily distinguished from actual posts and there is almost no chance I am going to ever click on them. Basically, i don't think they really interfere with the site all that much but again, I have not looked into the specifics of why they are there, or how they are targeted. I'm certain that they are targeted in a fashion similar to the ones I see on IG or FB because for the most part they are closely related to the kind of shopping that I do online anyway.

I get it, we all hate ads, but as ads go these are really not all that intrusive and to the people out there that are outraged that this is now happening, you have options such as Partiko and Busy that will not show the ads (I haven't actually used Busy but this is what I have heard.) For me, I hardly even notice they are there, once they start hijacking what I am doing or being pop-ups I think I will take issue with them, but for the time being, I think maybe we should all just calm down a little bit?

What do you think? Like I said I don't look into the specifics of any of this but I do realize that all businesses have to make money in order to remain solvent and if this tiny little addition in any way helps the platform to remain relevant or even to grow, then I am ok with it.

Sort:

My opinion is this: Adblock, bitches.

there's that too! But why use tools that are easily at your disposal when you can whine about it instead?

I mean, I do enjoy stripping down naked and just going to town on my genitals with a hammer while reading people whining and crying on here...So, good point.

Being a computer guy (my business - retirement no thanks - besides mucking around with planes/warbirds), can't comment cause I use many extensions to block scripts, ads and other crap. But after disabling them to take a look-see - seems fairly un-intrusive imo.

Doesn't bug me really. I haven't really seen them and I know they are there to help increase revenue. Would the ones who are bitching complain if someone said can I advertise on your blog and pay you?

yes, and if it has even a tiny impact on the market value of Steem, i'm for it

Ads are ok if it is helping the platform to grow.

By the way, For steemit as it is a crypto based platform, they have to search for some crypto based alternatives.

I'm among those who in your opinion

should chill out a bit.

I had a post two days ago about it and another one is ready to be posted. I don't like it, this is not what I've signed up for. I want the ad-free Steemit back.

lol, i was just reading your post after I made mine. You bring up a lot of good points in yours.

Thank you! :)

I think when changes are coming a notice should go out first so that people don't panic. When I noticed the change and been asked to login again I thought my account had been hacked, I left the whole thing and waited. After sometime I came back and check members post before knowing it was official. I don't really have issues with adds cos they're different but I wish a notice was sent out first. Nice write-up.

As others have said, I would've liked a notice/announcement of sort before implementing ads. Though I know Steemit has been operating on negative revenue for a while and the ads now are necessary for the website to keep running.

also the ads don't take up much of the space so I don't mind.
